GRAIN ROT Weapons Tier List – Best Weapons & Guns

If you’re heading into the dark depths of GRAIN ROT, picking the right weapon can make the difference between coming back with a bag full of junk and becoming another meal for whatever is lurking down there.

The game doesn’t exactly give you a huge arsenal to choose from, but that doesn’t mean every weapon is equally useful. Some are fantastic all-rounders, some are better for specific jobs, and then there are a couple that I’d honestly rather leave sitting on the ground.

I’ve ranked the current weapons into four tiers based on how useful they are for combat, resource gathering, versatility, and how reliable they feel during a run.

And yes, your fists are technically weapons.

No, that doesn’t mean you should use them.

GRAIN ROT Weapons Tier List – Best Weapons & Guns

Here’s the quick ranking before we get into the details:

S Tier

  • Sword
  • Gun

A Tier

  • Hammer

B Tier

  • Mallet

C Tier

  • Hands

The current weapon selection is fairly small, so each weapon has a pretty clear role. The important thing is understanding what that role actually is instead of trying to force every weapon into every situation.

S Tier – Sword

The Sword is easily my favorite melee weapon in GRAIN ROT.

It doesn’t have the versatility of the Hammer when it comes to destroying objects, but that’s not really why you’re carrying it.

You’re carrying it because it kills things extremely well.

The damage is reliable, the range is perfectly usable for a melee weapon, and most importantly, you can deal with the majority of enemies you’ll encounter in the darker areas without needing some elaborate strategy.

See an enemy?

Swing.

It’s refreshingly simple.

The Sword also feels particularly good when you’re surrounded or need to clear a path quickly. You don’t have to carefully line up complicated attacks or worry about managing some unusual mechanic.

Just keep swinging and make sure you don’t get overwhelmed.

Its biggest weakness is resource destruction. Technically, the Sword can destroy certain objects, but it’s not efficient enough for me to recommend using it as your main tool for gathering resources.

That’s fine, though.

Let the Hammer or Mallet handle the junk.

Let the Sword handle the monsters.

Why Sword is S Tier:

  • Excellent melee damage
  • Reliable against most enemies
  • Easy to use
  • Great for clearing paths
  • Doesn’t require complicated tactics

If you’re looking for a straightforward combat weapon, Sword is the easiest recommendation on this list.

S Tier – Gun

The Gun is the other weapon I’d happily put into S Tier.

The biggest reason is obvious:

Range.

A lot of enemies in GRAIN ROT want to get right up in your face, so being able to damage them before they reach you is a huge advantage.

The Gun gives you a comfortable distance from the things trying to kill you, and that can make certain encounters considerably safer.

It also deals respectable damage, meaning you’re not sacrificing too much stopping power just because you’re fighting from range.

There is, however, one rather annoying problem.

The Gun is loud.

Very loud, apparently.

The noise can attract nearby enemies, which means your successful kill can sometimes turn into a completely different problem when everything else in the area decides to come investigate.

So don’t treat the Gun like a completely risk-free weapon.

Shoot, reposition and keep an eye on your surroundings.

The range is fantastic, but getting surrounded because you fired without thinking can quickly erase that advantage.

Why Gun is S Tier:

  • Excellent range
  • Good damage
  • Lets you fight enemies before they reach you
  • Great for dangerous encounters
  • Particularly useful against aggressive enemies

If you’re comfortable managing the noise, the Gun is one of the best weapons available.

A Tier – Hammer

The Hammer is probably the most balanced weapon in the current game.

It can do two important jobs:

Kill enemies and destroy objects.

That’s a pretty useful combination when you’re out collecting junk and don’t want to constantly switch between specialized tools.

The Hammer isn’t quite as effective as the Sword in combat, which is the main reason it stays in A Tier.

Its damage is perfectly usable, but if the Hammer hit harder, I’d have no problem moving it into S Tier.

Where it really shines is versatility.

If you’re exploring an area where you need to fight something one minute and smash through an object the next, the Hammer lets you handle both without much trouble.

For newer players, this can actually make it a very comfortable weapon to carry.

Why Hammer is A Tier:

  • Good combat performance
  • Can destroy objects
  • Useful for gathering resources
  • Very versatile
  • Great alternative when you don’t have a Sword

If you haven’t managed to get a Sword yet, don’t worry.

A Hammer will get the job done.

B Tier – Mallet

The Mallet is a very specialized tool.

And honestly, that’s where the problem comes from.

If your goal is destroying objects and collecting Gold or other resources, the Mallet is excellent.

It does exactly what you’d expect and makes breaking down objects much easier.

The moment you encounter a serious enemy, though, the situation changes.

The Mallet isn’t a weapon I’d want to rely on for combat.

It can deal with the smallest enemies, but against anything more dangerous, you’re basically asking for trouble.

So I’d treat the Mallet as a resource-gathering tool rather than a proper combat weapon.

If you’re carrying it because you’re planning to demolish a bunch of objects, great.

If you’re carrying it because you think you’re going to fight your way through the dark depths with it, I’d reconsider that plan.

Why Mallet is B Tier:

  • Excellent for demolishing objects
  • Good for gathering resources
  • Can handle very small enemies
  • Poor against stronger enemies
  • Extremely situational in combat

It’s not a bad item.

It’s just a terrible choice when you’re expecting it to behave like the Sword.

C Tier – Hands

And then we have the ultimate emergency weapon:

Your fists.

Look, punching things sounds brave.

It isn’t.

Your hands can’t efficiently destroy resources, and they’re terrible in actual combat. Even against weaker enemies, you’re putting yourself in unnecessary danger by trying to fight without a proper weapon.

Could you technically punch something to death?

Probably.

Should you?

Absolutely not.

If you somehow find yourself with nothing else available, sure, throw a few punches and hope for the best.

But if you’re choosing between picking up a weapon and using your fists, there really isn’t a decision to make.

Pick up the weapon.

Why Hands are C Tier:

  • Poor damage
  • No useful resource-destroying ability
  • Forces you into close-range combat
  • Extremely risky
  • Only useful as a last resort

Your fists are what you use when the game has taken everything else away from you.

And even then, I’d start looking for a weapon immediately.

Which GRAIN ROT Weapon Should You Use?

If you just want the quick answer:

Best melee weapon: Sword

Best ranged weapon: Gun

Best all-rounder: Hammer

Best resource-destruction tool: Mallet

Worst option: Hands

The choice between Sword and Gun mostly comes down to how you prefer to deal with enemies.

If you like getting up close and clearing enemies quickly, go Sword.

If you prefer keeping your distance, Gun is the obvious choice.

Just remember that firing the Gun can attract additional enemies, so sometimes the Sword’s quieter approach can actually be safer.

Sword vs Hammer

This is probably the most useful comparison for newer players.

The Sword is better when your priority is survival and combat.

The Hammer is better when you want one weapon that can do a little bit of everything.

If you already have a Sword, I’d stick with it for serious combat and use another tool for resource gathering.

If you don’t have one yet, the Hammer is a perfectly respectable substitute.

Gun vs Sword

This one is much closer.

Gun gives you distance and lets you start dealing damage before enemies reach you.

Sword doesn’t make noise in the same way, and you don’t have to worry about attracting additional enemies every time you attack.

So there’s a trade-off:

Gun: safer distance, but more noise.

Sword: dangerous distance, but quieter and extremely reliable.

Personally, I’d happily carry either one.

Final GRAIN ROT Weapon Ranking

For the current weapon selection, my final ranking is:

S Tier

  • Sword
  • Gun

A Tier

  • Hammer

B Tier

  • Mallet

C Tier

  • Hands

The good news is that the weapon system isn’t overly complicated.

If you want to kill monsters, Sword and Gun are your best friends.

If you want something that can fight while also helping you break down objects, Hammer is the flexible choice.

If you’re mainly collecting resources, Mallet has a clear purpose.

And if you’ve reached the point where you’re considering punching the monsters with your bare hands, I’d say that’s a pretty good sign that it’s time to find an actual weapon.
