Cauldrons are one of the most interesting mechanics in Alchemy Factory 1.0, and once you understand how they work, they can completely change the way you build your factory. Instead of always following long and complicated production chains, you can combine three items and use their hidden values to create something entirely different.
In this post, we’ll explain how the Cauldron system works, how Cauldron Values and Target Values determine your results, and why some recipes are much better than others. We’ll also look at ways to find recipes, reduce production costs, simplify large factories, and make better use of cheap ingredients.
If you’re willing to experiment, the Cauldron can become one of the most powerful tools in your factory. And if you don’t feel like spending hours throwing random items into a magical pot, we’ve also included some useful recipes and strategies that can help you get started.
Alchemy Factory 1.0 Cauldron Guide – Values, Strategies
The Cauldron allows you to put three items together and create another item.
However, the result isn’t based on a traditional recipe system where specific ingredients always create a specific item. Instead, the game uses hidden numerical values.
Every item has a Cauldron Value, while items that can be produced through the Cauldron have a Cauldron Target Value.
The game adds together the Cauldron Values of your three ingredients. It then looks at the available output items and selects the one with the Target Value closest to your total.
This means you don’t always need to hit an exact number.
You can sometimes be slightly above or below the Target Value and still receive the item you want. The important thing is making sure your total is closer to your desired item’s Target Value than another possible output.
Because of this system, you can sometimes overpay or underpay for a recipe.
The difference between your ingredient total and the output’s Target Value is often referred to as the Cauldron Distance.
Why Cauldron Recipes Matter
Not every recipe is equally useful.
An item’s Cauldron Value and its actual production cost are completely separate things. A difficult and expensive item might have a value that allows you to create it cheaply through a Cauldron, while another item could actually cost more to create through the Cauldron than through its normal production chain.
This means finding the right combination is important.
When I’m planning a Cauldron setup, I try to balance three things:
- Production cost
- Recipe simplicity
- Factory space
The best recipe isn’t always the one with the mathematically closest value. Sometimes a slightly less efficient recipe is easier to produce and takes up far less space.
Cauldrons Can Save a Huge Amount of Space
Large production chains can become complicated very quickly.
Some items require multiple machines, resources, and processing steps before you finally get the material you need. A Cauldron can sometimes replace much of that production chain with three simpler ingredients.
This can make your factory smaller and easier to manage.
Some Recipes Can Save Money
Most Cauldron recipes aren’t automatically cheaper than normal production.
However, some combinations can provide major savings.
If you find ingredients with a high Cauldron Value compared to their production cost, you can combine them to reach expensive Target Values without spending as much money as you normally would.
This becomes especially powerful later in the game.
And Honestly, Alchemy Is Just Fun
We’re playing an alchemy game, after all.
There is something satisfying about throwing strange materials into a giant Cauldron and watching them turn into something completely different. You can build a perfectly optimized factory if you want, but sometimes it’s also fun to just experiment and see what happens.
Duplicate Ingredient Penalties
One important thing to remember is that repeating ingredients reduces their total Cauldron Value.
If you use the same item twice, the total value receives a penalty and is reduced to 65% of its normal combined value.
If you use the same item three times, the total value is reduced to 50%.
Because of this, using three different ingredients is usually the best approach.
However, repeating an item can sometimes still be useful if you specifically need to lower your total value to reach a different output.
Example of How Cauldron Values Work
Let’s use a simple example.
Imagine we add:
- Stone — Cauldron Value 4
- Linen Thread — Cauldron Value 9
- Linen Rope — Cauldron Value 13
The total value is:
4 + 9 + 13 = 26
The closest available Target Values are:
- Clay — Target Value 20
- Coke — Target Value 30
Since 26 is closer to 30 than 20, the Cauldron produces Coke.
Now imagine we change the ingredients and lower the total to 25.
In that situation, the value sits exactly between Clay and Coke. When there is a tie, the game favors the lower Target Value, so the result becomes Clay.
This is important because even changing one ingredient can completely change the output.
Example of the Duplicate Penalty
Let’s try another combination:
- Linen Thread
- Linen Thread
- Linen Rope
Normally, their values would add up to 31.
However, because Linen Thread is being used twice, the duplication penalty applies.
The total is reduced to approximately 20.2, which means the Cauldron produces Clay instead of Coke.
So while repeating ingredients might seem convenient, it can dramatically change your final result.
How to Find Cauldron Recipes
There are several ways to discover useful Cauldron recipes.
Experiment With Your Own Recipes
The most fun option is simply experimenting.
Try different combinations and see what happens.
This is probably the closest thing to actually being an alchemist. Throw materials together, make mistakes, discover something useful, and eventually build your own collection of secret recipes.
You don’t always need to immediately search for the perfect answer.
Sometimes discovering a good recipe yourself is more satisfying than copying one.
Use a Cauldron Calculator
If you want a more direct approach, you can use the online Alchemy Factory Codex and its Cauldron Calculator to search for recipes based on either your desired output or the ingredients you already have.
You can find it here:
https://alchemy-factory-codex.com/device/cauldron/
The calculator can help you explore the enormous number of possible combinations.
However, you’ll still need to decide which recipe actually works best for your factory. A mathematically valid recipe isn’t always the cheapest or easiest one to produce.
Check Recommended Recipes
If you don’t want to spend hours testing combinations, you can also use recipes discovered by other players.
The best recipes often depend on what you’re trying to do. Some are better for saving money, while others are better for simplifying complicated production chains.

Best Cauldron Strategy for Saving Money
If your goal is to reduce production costs, you should pay close attention to the relationship between an item’s Cauldron Value and its normal production cost.
Some ingredients provide much more Cauldron Value than the amount of money required to produce them.
These are some of the most useful ingredients for cost-efficient recipes:
- Flax Fiber — 2.5 Value / 1.4 Copper Coins
- Sage Powder — 3.5 / 2
- Linen Thread — 9 / 4.2
- Soap — 23 / 13.3
- Soap Powder — 24 / 13.3
- Healing Potion — 30 / 20.4
- Linen — 60 / 42
- Salt — 65 / 43.5
- Yeast Powder — 88 / 61.3
- Bandage — 120 / 82.8
- Lavender — 180 / 133
- Gloom Spores — 220 / 153
- Unstable Catalyst — 746 / 433
- Perfumed Soap — 1,216 / 889
- Fertile Catalyst — 4,068 / 1,705
- Lapis Lazuli — 15,825 / 8,705
- Resonant Catalyst — 23,869 / 11,958
- Silver Amulet — 25,317 / 16,951
- Sapphire — 400,000 / 131,505
- Moonlit Soap — 487,893 / 140,222
- Emerald — 600,000 / 160,000
- Philosopher’s Stone — 1,000,000 / 470,000
- Eternal Catalyst — 1,193,000 / 649,000
These costs are based on normal production without upgrades.
If you’ve upgraded fertilizer or fuel efficiency, some ingredients can become even cheaper to produce.
How to Use This Strategy
The basic idea is to choose three ingredients with a strong Cauldron Value-to-cost ratio.
Then combine them until your total gets close enough to the Target Value of the item you want.
You don’t necessarily need to hit the exact Target Value.
You simply need to make sure your total is closer to your desired output than the next lower or higher output.
This gives you a lot of flexibility when creating recipes.
Using Cauldrons to Reduce Production Complexity
Saving money isn’t the only reason to use Cauldrons.
Sometimes the biggest advantage is simply reducing the complexity of your factory.
Late-game production chains can become extremely large. Instead of building every individual step required for a complicated material, you can mass-produce easier ingredients and convert them through Cauldrons.
This can save space and make your entire factory easier to manage.
Master Plant Production
One of the strongest strategies is focusing heavily on plant production.
If you upgrade fertilizer efficiency and mass-produce plants, those cheap plants can become the foundation for many Cauldron recipes.
Planters can produce huge amounts of materials, especially once your fertilizer setup becomes efficient.
With enough plant production, you can use Cauldrons to create many of the materials needed for the rest of your factory.
Use Cauldrons for High-Volume Materials
Some materials are required in huge quantities and can take up a significant amount of factory space.
Cauldrons can be especially useful for materials such as:
- Bronze
- Clay
- Gloom Powder
- Salt
Instead of creating massive traditional production lines, you can sometimes simplify the process with a compact Cauldron setup.
Favorite Cauldron Recipes
If you want to skip some of the experimentation and start using useful recipes immediately, here are some strong combinations.
Impure Copper Powder
Flax Fiber + Flax + Lavender = Impure Copper Powder
This is especially useful for mass Bronze production.
Turquoise and Copper Powder
Chamomile + Chamomile Powder + Flax = Turquoise
Then:
Turquoise + Lavender + Chamomile = Copper Powder
This gives you a relatively simple route toward Copper production.
Quicklime
Flax + Flax Fiber + Plank = Quicklime
Salt
Soap + Soap Powder + Linen Thread = Salt
Black Powder
Flax + Linen Thread + Bandage = Black Powder
Sulfur
Flax + Flax Fiber + Gloom Spore = Sulfur
Malachite
Vitality Potion + Bandage + Lavender = Malachite
Topaz
Flax + Flax Fiber + Perfumed Soap = Topaz
Broken Shard
Flax + Unstable Catalyst + Gloom Spore = Broken Shard
Dull Shard
Flax + Perfumed Soap Powder + Perfumed Soap = Dull Shard
Vitality Essence
Salt + Linen + Unstable Catalyst = Vitality Essence
Silver Powder
Flax + Unstable Catalyst + Fertile Catalyst = Silver Powder
Obsidian
Flax + Perfumed Soap + Fertile Catalyst = Obsidian
Shattered Crystal
Flax + Flax Fiber + Fertile Catalyst = Shattered Crystal
Polished Crystal
Flax + Flax Fiber + Lapis Lazuli = Polished Crystal
Resonant Catalyst
Flax + Fertile Catalyst + Lapis Lazuli = Resonant Catalyst
This recipe can save production costs compared to the normal production method.
Impure Gold Dust
Resonant Catalyst + Perfumed Soap Powder + Perfumed Soap = Impure Gold Dust
Adamant
Resonant Catalyst + Resonant Catalyst + Fertile Catalyst = Adamant
Gold Dust
Resonant Catalyst + Fertile Catalyst + Lapis Lazuli = Gold Dust
Diamond
Resonant Catalyst + Silver Amulet + Lapis Lazuli = Diamond
Pure Gold Dust
Resonant Catalyst + Silver Amulet + Adamant = Pure Gold Dust
Philosopher’s Stone
Sapphire + Plank + Moonlit Soap = Philosopher’s Stone
The Cauldron is much more than just another crafting machine in Alchemy Factory.
Once you understand Cauldron Values and Target Values, you can start designing recipes around what your factory actually needs. You might use them to save money, reduce production complexity, save space, or simply experiment with strange combinations.
My biggest recommendation is not to blindly use every recipe you find.
Look at what resources are already cheap and easy for you to produce. Then use those materials to build Cauldron combinations that fit your own factory.
Sometimes the best recipe is the cheapest one. Sometimes it’s the simplest one. And sometimes it’s just the recipe that saves you from building another massive production line.
That’s the real fun of the Cauldron system—you can experiment, optimize, and eventually create your own collection of recipes that makes your Alchemy Factory run exactly the way you want.
