The public Steam test for ArcheAge Chronicles gives you your first hands-on look at the upcoming action MMORPG’s combat and open-world exploration. Before jumping into character creation, knowing how progression actually works will keep you from wasting your limited demo hours.
This demo runs as a free download on Steam from October 19 through October 26, unlocking at 10:00 AM PT / 12:00 PM CT / 1:00 PM ET. It contains roughly two to three hours of questing across the Diamond Shores zone, though life skills like housing, farming, and naval trading are reserved for future tests.
ArcheAge Chronicles Demo Beginner Guide – Best Tips
All character progress from this demo slice wipes before early access launches, so your goal is testing combat flow rather than grinding permanent gear. Prepare at least 100 GB of free space on an SSD to meet the game’s baseline storage requirements.
Choosing Your Starting Class and Weapons
ArcheAge Chronicles features four playable classes, each fielding two distinct weapon types during the demo with a third weapon planned for the full game. You should choose based on the active combat style you enjoy rather than chasing a temporary tier list.

Overview chart displaying the four available classes and their two weapon archetypes.
Class Weapon Archetypes
| Class | Weapon Archetype | Combat Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Longsword / Greatsword | Timed parries, reactive counters, and heavy frontline swings |
| Ranger | Longbow / Hatchet | Precision ranged sniping paired with agile close-quarters melee |
| Berserker | Axe & Shield / Warhammer | Defensive crowd control, party shielding, and elemental offense |
| Mage | Elemental Staff / Spellblade | Long-range elemental magic and hybrid mid-range strike combos |
Make sure to equip and test both weapons on your chosen class before considering a character reroll. Switching from a Longbow to a Hatchet on Ranger, or swapping a Longsword for a Greatsword on Warrior, dramatically changes your dodge timing and attack cadence.
5 Progression Habits to Build First
Falling into traditional MMO grinding habits will slow your early leveling to a crawl. The game rewards curiosity and world interaction far more than clearing endless monster camps.
1. Stop Grinding Random Mobs
Monster eliminations provide only a fraction of your overall character experience. Focus your time on clearing main quests, unlocking world discoveries, and checking off points of interest across Diamond Shores.

2. Distribute Core Stat Points Wisely
Leveling up increases your base stats—Strength, Agility, Constitution, Intelligence, Talent, and Endurance—rather than your weapon skills. Investing in Talent is critical for spellcasters and allows martial builds to equip higher-tier gear without receiving equip penalties.
3. Hunt Raeven’s Coilstones for Weapon Traits
Your weapon skills and combat passives do not rank up from regular level-ups. You must locate Raeven’s Coilstones by exploring challenging landmarks and defeating optional elite world bosses.
4. Offer Nui Tears to Increase Max HP
Keep a sharp eye out for glowing teardrop collectibles called Nui Tears scattered across ruins and watersides. Take them directly to seated stone Nui Statues to receive blessings that permanently raise your maximum health pool.
5. Loot World Monuments and Discovery Chests
Keep an eye out for ancient carved stone monoliths like Reynard’s Tower and tucked-away loot chests. These containers hold valuable tempering stones and crafting materials, and each chest is instanced individually per player so you never have to compete for world loot.

How to Unlock and Enter PvP Channels
The demo opens up open-world PvP much earlier than the eventual retail release so developers can stress-test netcode and parry windows. You begin inside a Standard channel where all incoming player damage is completely disabled.
To flag for combat, leave the starting settlement and follow the main road until you reach the first Nui Statue at your next destination. Interact with the shrine to manually toggle your channel to PvP, keeping in mind that channel swaps trigger an internal cooldown.
PvP channels host roughly 100 players and turn everyone hostile except your direct party and guild members. Defeating monsters in PvP channels yields a 10% to 15% bonus to monster EXP, but player kills do not drop loot or silver during this demo phase.
Unlocking the Throne of Hinnon Secret Dungeon
Beyond the primary story quests, the demo contains an unlisted, high-difficulty endgame challenge called the Throne of Hinnon. This encounter is tuned far above normal quest gear and demands tight dodging and parry coordination.
The dungeon entrance is sealed shut and requires a hidden key tucked away somewhere across Diamond Shores. Hunting down this hidden key and assembling an organized party serves as the ultimate combat benchmark before the demo closes.
