If you’re trying to unlock the Ent Achievement (Timber!) in A Game About Chopping Trees, there are a couple of things the game doesn’t exactly go out of its way to explain.
You need to find two hidden keys, use them to open a secret stash, and then survive a surprisingly dangerous boss fight. The good news is that once you know where everything is, the achievement is pretty straightforward.
A Game About Chopping Trees Ent Achievement (Timber!) Guide
Here’s the route I recommend so you can get everything done without wandering around the map or taking unnecessary damage.
Where to Find the First Key
The first key is very close to the starting area, but it’s easy to miss if you don’t know where to look.
After spawning, go behind the house and look near the large wheel.
You’ll find a small hole in the ground covered by wooden planks. Break the wooden planks and you’ll reveal the first hidden key.
Grab it and keep it with you. You’ll need both keys later to access the secret stash.
Where to Find the Second Key
The second key is found in the attic of the house in the second area.
Once you’ve reached the second area, head inside the house and make your way upstairs to the attic.
Look around carefully because the key isn’t necessarily something you’ll notice while simply running through the room. Pick it up before moving on so you don’t have to backtrack later.
At this point, you should have both keys needed for the secret area.
How to Find the Secret Stash
Once you reach the third area, head behind the house.
Stand facing the house and look toward the right side of the fence. Jump over the fence and follow the path behind it.
Keep following the route and you’ll eventually come across the entrance to the hidden stash.
You’ll also find the locks that require the two keys you’ve collected earlier.
Use both keys to unlock the stash and continue toward the boss encounter.
Ent Boss Fight Guide
The boss fight is split into three phases, but there’s a pretty simple trick that makes the fight much safer.
The important thing is to pay attention to which attack the boss is using in each phase instead of trying to rush the fight.
Phase 1 – Hide Behind the Tree Stump
During the first phase, the Ent mainly attacks by throwing rocks at you.
Each rock takes roughly one-sixth of your health, so repeatedly getting hit can drain your health surprisingly quickly.
Luckily, there’s an easy way to avoid most of the damage.
Stay behind the tree stump.
The stump blocks the boss’s projectiles, allowing you to stay protected while dealing with the encounter.
There’s no real reason to stand in the open here. Use the environment to your advantage.
Phase 2 – Watch for the Ground Spikes
The second phase adds another attack to the fight.
The boss continues throwing rocks, but it also starts spawning spikes from the ground.
This is where you need to start moving.
When you notice the spikes appearing around you, move backward to get away from them.
Once the spikes are no longer threatening you, move back behind the tree stump to protect yourself from the incoming rocks.
So the basic pattern is:
Spikes appear → move backward → avoid them → return behind the stump.
Don’t panic and run around the entire arena. The stump is still your best protection against the rocks.
Phase 3 – Crouch Under the Laser
The final phase sounds more dangerous than it actually is once you know the trick.
The Ent continues spawning the ground spikes, but it stops throwing rocks.
Instead, it uses a laser that tracks your position.
Getting hit by the laser is an instant kill, so this is the attack you absolutely don’t want to mess up.
Fortunately, the laser always targets a fixed height.
When Phase 3 begins, move toward the back of the arena and crouch.
The laser will pass over your head while you stay low. You still need to watch for the ground spikes, but the laser itself becomes much easier to avoid this way.
Once you know this trick, the third phase is actually the easiest part of the entire fight.
Ent Achievement Complete
After surviving the three phases and defeating the boss, the Ent Achievement (Timber!) should be completed.
The whole achievement becomes much simpler when you break it down:
- Find Key #1 behind the spawn house near the large wheel.
- Break the wooden planks covering the hole to collect it.
- Find Key #2 in the attic of the house in the second area.
- Reach the third area and go behind the house.
- Jump over the fence on the right side.
- Follow the path to the hidden stash.
- Use both keys to unlock it.
- Defeat the Ent using the stump and crouching strategy.
A Little Bonus Before You Leave
There’s also a cute little bonus waiting around the area: a cat.
If another player happens to be passing by, they can interact with her and click Like to pet her once.
It doesn’t appear to be part of the Ent achievement itself, but hey, you’ve already made it this far. Give the cat some attention while you’re there.
And with that, you’ve got the Ent achievement, the secret stash, and a much safer way to handle the boss without repeatedly getting smacked by rocks or vaporized by the laser.
