Fishing is one of the most important progression systems in Birb, but simply equipping your strongest rod isn’t always the best strategy. Some earlier rods can actually give you a better chance of catching the specific fish needed for your next rod.
In this guide, we will go through the best fishing strategy from the Simple Rod all the way to the Divine Rod. I’ll explain which rod, hook, lure, and bait you should use at each stage, along with the important catch-rate tricks that can save you a lot of time and Moneta.
We’ll also look at whether you should focus on the Bridge or Expedition after unlocking it. I personally recommend understanding both paths because each gives you important progression, but the better choice depends on whether you want faster rods and Seagull progression or faster access to Expedition and Desert upgrades.
Birb Fishing Guide – Catch Rates, Rod Tier and Fish Tier
Before getting into the individual rods, there are a few things you should know that will make your fishing progression much easier.
You can hide the Fish Caught popup from the Fishing window settings if you find it annoying.
You can also click your Moneta badge to display your current fish count and fishing rate.
Once you unlock the Seagull, I recommend putting it on Training until it is maxed out. Early in the game, you will still be catching most fish yourself, but eventually your Seagulls will catch far more fish than you can manually.
Why Some Lower-Tier Rods Are Better
One of the most confusing parts of Birb fishing is that the strongest rod you own isn’t always the best rod for getting your next upgrade.
For example, the Simple Rod has around a 16.4% chance to catch Gudgeon, which is needed for the Reinforced Rod.
The Sturdy Rod only has around a 12.9% chance to catch it.
So even though the Sturdy Rod is stronger, using the Simple Rod can actually get you to the next rod faster.
There are two main mechanics responsible for this:
- Increasing your rod tier adds higher-tier fish to your catch pool.
- Increasing Luck reduces the chance of many common fish.
This can dilute the chance of getting the specific Rod Fish you actually need.
Rod Tier and Fish Tier
Rods and fish both have tiers.
The Simple Rod is Tier 0, while the Sturdy Rod is Tier 1.
In general, a rod of Tier X can:
- Catch fish at Tier X or below normally.
- Catch Tier X+1 fish with a 0.15x chance penalty.
- Completely exclude fish that are two or more tiers above it.
So when you equip a stronger rod, you aren’t simply improving your existing catch chances. You are also adding new fish to the pool.
For example:
Simple Rod
- Tier 0 fish normally
- Tier 1 fish at 0.15x
Sturdy Rod
- Tier 0 fish normally
- Tier 1 fish normally
- Tier 2 fish at 0.15x
Adding those extra fish can dilute the chance of catching a particular lower-tier fish.
How Luck Changes Catch Chances
Normally, more Luck means a higher chance of catching rarer fish and a lower chance of catching common fish.
However, Common and Uncommon Rod Fish have special behavior. Their chance isn’t reduced in the same way as normal Common and Uncommon fish when Luck increases.
This is one reason Luck can actually help you obtain some Rod Fish.
For example, with the Sturdy Rod, increasing Luck reduces the relative chance of ordinary Common fish while Rod Fish are protected from that reduction. As a result, the Rod Fish become relatively more likely.
Bridge or Expedition?
After you unlock the Expedition, you reach an important choice.
At this point, your rod is still relatively weak, and Bridge fish cannot be caught while fishing in the Expedition. This means you have to decide whether you want to focus on Expedition progression or continue improving your rods on the Bridge.
Both paths are useful, so let’s look at what each one gives you.
Expedition Benefits
The biggest advantage of the Expedition is its permanent progression bonuses.
The second Expedition sacrifice gives you:
2x popcorn and seed gains
The fourth sacrifice increases this to:
3x popcorn and seed gains
The second major advantage is the Floor 2 boss.
Defeating the Floor 2 boss gives you a Dungeon Key, which unlocks a permanent upgrade for the Desert Tree.
Desert Tree
The Desert Tree gives you access to a new popcorn field and a new currency called Golden Popcorn.
The new upgrade tree provides:
- Expedition bonuses
- Golden Popcorn bonuses
- 8x Seeds
- 2x Popcorn
- A new companion
- Daily quests
The new companion has its own levels and Rebirbs, so unlocking it early is valuable.
Daily quests also provide small bonuses to different currencies and Expedition mechanics. These can include things such as:
- +4% Twigs
- +2% Popcorn
- Seed bonuses
- Feather bonuses
- Various Expedition bonuses
The earlier you unlock Daily Quests, the longer you have to accumulate these bonuses.
The guide estimates around 45–60 minutes to reach the second Expedition sacrifice and roughly 6 hours to defeat the Floor 2 boss and maximize the Desert upgrade tree.
Bridge Benefits
The Bridge is much better if your priority is fishing progression.
With three Reel Speed buffs, manual Bridge fishing can become extremely fast.
One example from the guide reached around 3,100 fish per hour manually on the Bridge, compared with roughly 520 fish per hour without manually fishing.
That means if you’re not actively fishing on the Bridge, your Bridge-related progression can be around six times slower.
With a second Seagull, this gap becomes smaller, but manual fishing is still extremely valuable.
Better Rods and Aquarium Progression
The Bridge is also where your rods and Aquarium progression matter.
Better rods let you catch better fish, which improves your Seagulls.
Some particularly important fish include Maroon Whale and Legendary fishing XP fish.
Once you have the required Maroon Whale upgrade, Fishing XP can affect your Seagulls. Better Seagull XP means faster Seagull progression and eventually better catch rates.
Fully upgraded Seagulls can reach around 22,000 fish per hour on the Bridge according to the guide.
Higher-rarity fish also sell for much more Moneta.
This is another reason the Bridge can be extremely valuable. Expedition fishing isn’t affected by Luck in the same way, meaning a very large percentage of your Expedition catches can be Common fish with low selling values.
Better fish also give your Seagulls significantly more XP.
The guide estimates around 7 hours and 30 minutes of playtime on the Bridge from the beginning of the game to afford the Prism Rod.
Bridge vs Expedition: Which Should You Choose?
Expedition Path
The Expedition gives you:
- Up to 24x Seed gains
- Up to 6x Popcorn gains
- A new companion
- Desert progression
- Golden Popcorn
- Daily quests
Bridge Path
The Bridge gives you:
- Better rods
- Better fish
- Better Moneta income
- Better Seagull progression
- Better Fishing XP
- Aquarium progression
Both are valuable.
However, I personally prefer the Bridge path because better fishing progression makes your Seagulls level much faster.
Seeds and popcorn are useful, but at this stage I would rather improve my fishing and Seagulls first.
Another reason is Skill Point fish. You want to maximize your Seagulls before consuming those fish, so getting your Seagulls leveled early can improve your later Skill Point gains.
Recommended Expedition Path
If you decide to prioritize Expedition progression, I recommend this order:
- Go to the Expedition with Reel Speed fish bonuses and sell your fish for Moneta.
- Stay in the Expedition until you defeat the Floor 2 boss.
- Unlock the Desert Tree and farm Golden Popcorn using two Radius fish bonuses.
- Buy all upgrades related to the new companion.
- Return to the Bridge with Reel Speed bonuses and progress your rods until you can afford the 5M Moneta upgrade.
- Return to Golden Popcorn farming until you have 55B Golden Popcorn for the 20x SP gain bonus.
- Go back to the Expedition with Fishing XP bonuses to progress your Parrot and Seagulls.
The 55B Golden Popcorn requirement sounds enormous, but the guide notes that it can be farmed relatively quickly considering how powerful the 20x SP bonus is.
Recommended Bridge Path
If you prefer the Bridge route, use this progression:
- Go to the Expedition until you can afford the second sacrifice.
- The second sacrifice gives you 2x Seed and Popcorn gains.
- Return to the Bridge and fish until you can afford the 5M Moneta upgrade.
- You may need to purchase the three Spirit Aura upgrades once to reveal this upgrade.
- While fishing on the Bridge, return to the Expedition every five minutes to farm Uncommon Artifact Chests.
- These chests can give you three 15% SP gain artifacts and useful Common Aura for body upgrades.
- After buying the 5M Moneta upgrade, return to the Expedition with Fishing XP bonuses.
- Continue progressing your Seagulls until you defeat the Floor 2 boss.
- Unlock the Desert Tree.
- Farm Golden Popcorn with Radius bonuses until you reach 55B.
- Return to the Expedition with Fishing XP bonuses to continue progressing your Parrot and Seagulls.
Phase 1: Use the Simple Rod
The Simple Rod is surprisingly useful during the early game.
At this point, don’t rush to replace it simply because another rod has better stats. You want to use the rod that gives you the best chance of obtaining the specific fish required for your next upgrade.
Sturdy Rod
After your first Evolution, head to the Bridge and fish while your Sparrow gathers popcorn.
Remember to Rebirb whenever you reach the required feather milestone so that your popcorn gains continue improving.
You should also consume a fish that provides a Reel Speed bonus.
For equipment, you can purchase the Wooden Hook for 200 Popcorn.
Once you can afford the 5,000 Feather upgrade, buy it because it unlocks the full fishing upgrade tree.
Use Safe Sell to sell your fish for Moneta and purchase upgrades. Safe Sell does not sell Rod Fish, so you don’t need to worry about accidentally selling the fish needed for your next rod.
I wouldn’t spend Moneta on bait yet because it is too expensive at this stage.

| 10x Blue Grey Fish | 14.7% | Coastal Chum |
Reinforced Rod
The Sturdy Rod provides:
- 1.5x Luck
- -9% cooldown
Despite these upgrades, the Simple Rod is still better for catching the Rod Fish needed for the Reinforced Rod.
However, the Sturdy Rod can be useful if you want to catch a good Reel Speed fish before switching back to the Simple Rod.

Professional Rod
The Reinforced Rod gives you:
- 2x Luck
- -15% cooldown
At this point, the Reinforced Rod is only slightly worse than the Simple Rod for obtaining the next Rod Fish.
I recommend using the Reinforced Rod now because the better overall fish quality gives you more Moneta and Fishing XP.
Sell your fish for around 3,500 Moneta and continue upgrading your popcorn gains toward the 10B Popcorn Evolution.
Once you reach Fishing Level 10, donate fish to the Aquarium to unlock the second fish buff slot.

For comparison, the Simple Rod has around 16.3% and 17.4% chances for these two fish, while the Sturdy Rod sits around 12.8% and 13.6%.
Phase 2: Use the Professional Rod
Once the Rod Fish move beyond Tier 0, the Simple Rod loses its advantage.
From this point forward, the Professional Rod becomes your main fishing rod for obtaining the next few upgrades.
Fiberglass Rod
The Professional Rod provides:
- 2.5x Luck
- -19% cooldown
Before your second Evolution, donate and sell your fish and spend your Moneta because that currency will be lost during the Evolution.
After the second Evolution, remember to consume your Reel Speed fish and purchase the Advanced Lure as soon as you can.

Carbon Fiber Rod
The Fiberglass Rod gives:
- 4x Luck
- -25% cooldown
However, the Professional Rod still has an advantage when catching Tier 1 Rod Fish.
Because of the tier system, the Professional Rod has around twice the chance of catching the next Rod Fish.
So even though Fiberglass is stronger, I recommend keeping the Professional Rod equipped until you obtain the Carbon Fiber Rod.

Steamwork Rod
The Carbon Fiber Rod provides:
- 5.5x Luck

But the Professional Rod still more than doubles your chance of catching the next Rod Fish.
So keep using the Professional Rod until you obtain the Steamwork Rod.

Phase 3: Use Your Best Rod With the Cursed Hook
After the Steamwork Rod, you can finally leave the Professional Rod strategy behind.
From here, your best rod is generally the one you just purchased.
However, there is an important trick: use the Cursed Hook to reduce some of your Luck.
This lets you control the balance between Luck and the specific Rod Fish you are trying to catch.
Coconut Wand
The Steamwork Rod gives:
- 7.5x Luck
- -35% cooldown
First, purchase the Cursed Hook.
It is locked until Evolution 3 and requires an early-game fish. If you don’t have it yet, temporarily equip your Simple Rod and try to obtain the required fish quickly.
Bait becomes very powerful at this stage, but Coral Crumbs are expensive, so balance your spending between bait and other upgrades.

After you obtain 20x Black Perch, switch to the Wooden Hook.
You can also use Prism Flakes if you can afford the 40,000 Moneta cost.
The Wooden Hook gives you higher Luck at this point, while the valuable fish you catch can provide a large amount of Moneta.

Phase 4: Use Your Best Rod and Best Luck
From this point onward, the progression becomes much simpler.
You generally want to equip your best available rod and your best Luck setup, then use the bait required for the next Rod Fish.
Don’t forget to switch your bait between fish because different Rod Fish require different bait.
Using the correct bait makes buying the later rods dramatically faster.
Jade Rod
The Bone Rod provides:
- 30x Luck
- -55% cooldown
You also gain access to the Prismatic Badge, which increases Luck based on your highest rod tier.
This is a very strong upgrade and can be purchased after Treasure Hunter.

The biggest lesson from this fishing guide is that you shouldn’t always use your strongest rod.
During the early game, the Simple Rod and Professional Rod can actually be better for obtaining the specific Rod Fish needed for your next upgrade because of how Rod Tiers and Luck affect the catch pool.
Once you reach the Coconut Wand and later rods, the Cursed Hook becomes extremely important because you can control your Luck and optimize your catch pool.
Later in the progression, the strategy becomes much simpler: use your best rod, best fishing equipment, and the correct bait for the Rod Fish you’re targeting.
If you’re deciding between the Bridge and Expedition, I would personally prioritize the Bridge if your main goal is faster rod and Seagull progression. However, the Expedition remains extremely important because of its sacrifices, Desert Tree, Golden Popcorn, new companion, and other permanent upgrades.
Most importantly, don’t forget to use your Reel Speed, Fishing XP, and Radius fish bonuses at the right time. Those bonuses can make a huge difference to how quickly you progress through Birb.
