Birb Lake and Fish Breeding Guide – How to Unlock

In this Birb Lake and Fish Breeding Guide, I’ll explain how to unlock the Lake, how fish breeding works, and how you can use hybrids to create stronger buffs. Breeding can look complicated at first, but once you understand rarity, shiny chances, breeding time, and Lineage, it becomes much easier to plan your fish.

The Breeding Lake lets you combine two fish and create a hybrid that inherits the attributes and buffs of its parents. You can breed fish of the same species or completely different species, but the fish you choose can have a huge impact on the usefulness of the resulting hybrid.

I’ll also cover the best hybrid choices, how Shiny Progress and Lineage work, and some important tips for deciding when to save, fuse, or replace a hybrid. If you are trying to build powerful Skill Point or combat-focused fish, these systems are especially important.

Birb Lake and Fish Breeding Guide – How to Unlock

Before you can start breeding fish, you first need to unlock the Nest. The Lake is one of the areas inside the Nest that you can purchase after collecting enough Twigs.

When working toward the Lake, I recommend focusing on upgrades that help you gather Twigs faster. In particular, increasing your:

  • Number of growing boxes
  • Peck Power
  • Peck Rate
  • Twig Value

will make it easier to reach the amount of Twigs required for the Breeding Lake.

Once you have enough Twigs, you can purchase the Breeding Lake and gain access to fish breeding.

Hatchery Nursery

There is also an optional Nest upgrade called the Hatchery Nursery.

The Hatchery Nursery reduces the amount of time required to breed fish. It is not required to start breeding, so you can prioritize the Breeding Lake first and purchase the Nursery once you have enough additional Twigs.

If you plan to breed a large number of hybrids, the Nursery becomes particularly useful because breeding times can become quite long for higher-rarity fish.

How Fish Breeding Works

The basic idea behind breeding is simple: choose two fish and combine them to create a hybrid.

You can use:

  • Two fish of the same species
  • Two different fish species
  • Fish with the same or different buffs

The parents are consumed when the breeding process begins, and you must also pay Moneta based on the rarity of the parents.

Breeding Cost

Each parent has its own breeding cost based on rarity:

Parent Rarity Cost Per Fish
Common 25,000 Moneta
Uncommon 50,000 Moneta
Rare 100,000 Moneta
Epic 250,000 Moneta
Legendary 500,000 Moneta
Mythic 1,000,000 Moneta

Since both parents are consumed, breeding two expensive fish can become very costly. I recommend being careful before using valuable fish as parents, especially when you are still experimenting with different combinations.

Hybrid Rarity

Every hybrid receives its own rarity after breeding.

For parents from Common through Legendary, the resulting hybrid can range from Common up to Legendary. Mythic parents can also produce Mythic hybrids, although the exact Mythic rarity distribution is currently unknown.

Generally, using higher-rarity parents gives you a better chance of producing a high-rarity hybrid.

Hybrid Rarity Chances

The currently known rarity distributions for two parents of the same rarity are:

Parent Rarity Common Uncommon Rare Epic Legendary Mythic
Common 68% 25% 6% 0.9% 0.1% 0%
Uncommon 38% 38% 18% 5% 1% 0%
Rare 15% 30% 35% 16% 4% 0%
Epic 5% 15% 35% 35% 10% 0%
Legendary 0% 10% 30% 45% 15% 0%
Mythic Unknown Unknown Unknown Unknown Unknown Unknown

These values show why using better parents can be worthwhile. For example, two Legendary parents have a much better chance of producing an Epic or Legendary hybrid than two Common parents.

Shiny Hybrid Chances

Hybrids can also be Shiny, and Shiny fish provide stronger buffs just like normal Shiny fish.

Your Shiny chance depends on how many of your parents are Shiny:

Shiny Parents Shiny Chance
0 0.5%
1 5%
2 10%

So, breeding two Shiny parents gives you the best initial chance of creating a Shiny hybrid.

Shiny Progress

Breeding also has a bad-luck protection system called Shiny Progress.

When at least one parent is Shiny, your Shiny Progress starts at 0/100. If the resulting hybrid is not Shiny, the progress increases based on your Shiny chance.

With a 5% Shiny chance, the progress increases by 5 each failed attempt. With a 10% Shiny chance, it increases by 10.

Once the progress reaches 100/100, your next hybrid is guaranteed to be Shiny.

Whenever you successfully produce a Shiny hybrid, the progress resets back to 0/100.

An important detail is that this progress is tied to the specific hybrid and its parents. You cannot build progress using cheap Common parents and then switch to completely different Legendary parents to take advantage of it.

Breeding Time

Once you begin breeding, the active breeding window shows the parents, their buffs, the remaining time, and ways to speed up the process.

The breeding time depends on the rarity of the resulting hybrid:

Hybrid Rarity Breeding Time
Common 5 minutes
Uncommon 15 minutes
Rare 45 minutes
Epic 1.5 hours
Legendary 4.5 hours
Mythic Unknown

Higher-rarity breeding can therefore take considerably longer.

How to Speed Up Breeding

You can reduce the remaining breeding time by fishing.

One important restriction is that this fishing-based speed-up works with the Birb, not the Seagulls.

The game also checks whether the fish you catch matches certain properties of the breeding parents.

Same Biome

The Aquarium has nine biomes:

  • Coast
  • Reef
  • Freshwater
  • Ocean
  • Abyssal
  • Creatures
  • Mystical
  • Mechanical
  • Expedition

For the Same Biome bonus, the fish you catch only needs to match the biome of one of the parents.

Same Species

The Same Species bonus works similarly. Your catch needs to match the species of either parent.

Shiny Speed Reduction

A Shiny catch provides a percentage-based reduction to the remaining breeding time rather than a flat reduction.

If your main goal is to produce hybrids as quickly as possible, it is therefore useful to set up your Birb fishing build around catching the easier parent fish efficiently.

Hatched Hybrids

Once your breeding finishes, the hybrid becomes available.

You can have up to two hybrids available at once, although only one can be active at a time.

This gives you some flexibility. For example, you can have one hybrid dedicated to your main objective and another hybrid kept as a utility option.

The hybrid information panel shows:

  • Hybrid name
  • Rarity
  • Buffs
  • Lineage
  • Parents used

Hovering over the hybrid name also lets you see the exact parents that were used to create it.

What Is Lineage?

Lineage is another bad-luck protection system, but instead of helping with Shiny chances, it helps you improve the rarity of a hybrid.

The system allows you to continue breeding the same type of hybrid and gradually increase its rarity rather than relying entirely on getting lucky with every breeding attempt.

For Lineage to work, the newly bred hybrid must have the exact same parents as one of your saved hybrids.

How Lineage Progress Works

When you breed another hybrid with the same parents as a saved hybrid, you can fuse the new hybrid into the saved one to gain Lineage progress.

The amount of Lineage progress depends on the rarity of the newly bred hybrid:

Newly Bred Rarity Lineage Progress
Common 10
Uncommon 20
Rare 35
Epic 50
Legendary 100

Once the Lineage bar reaches 100/100, the hybrid increases to the next rarity and the Lineage progress resets.

For example, if your saved hybrid is Common and you fuse another Common hybrid into it, you gain 10 Lineage progress.

After enough progress, the Common hybrid can become Uncommon, and you can continue progressing toward Rare, Epic, and eventually Legendary.

When Should You Replace a Hybrid?

You do not always want to fuse every new hybrid into your existing one.

Sometimes a newly bred hybrid is already a much better rarity than your saved hybrid, making it more efficient to discard the old one and save the new hybrid instead.

For example, if your current hybrid is Common, you would need a large amount of Lineage progress to reach Rare. If you suddenly breed a Rare version of the same hybrid, keeping the Rare one can be much more efficient than continuing to upgrade the Common one.

Always compare the rarity of the new hybrid against the Lineage progress you would gain before deciding.

Lineage and Shiny Hybrids

Shiny status works independently from rarity.

This means a normal saved hybrid can be fused with a newly bred Shiny hybrid, and the saved hybrid can become Shiny regardless of the rarity difference.

You therefore do not have separate progression paths for Shiny and non-Shiny hybrids.

Think of Shiny as an additional attribute that can be added to the hybrid alongside its rarity.

Best Hybrid Choices

Right now, the strongest general-purpose choice is usually to breed two copies of your best Skill Point buff fish.

However, the ideal choice can change depending on what fish you have and what you are currently trying to accomplish.

For a secondary or utility hybrid, you may instead want something focused on:

  • Parrot Damage
  • HP
  • Skill Points
  • Other specialized buffs

A Parrot Damage hybrid can be useful when you need extra damage to defeat particularly strong enemies, while an HP-focused hybrid can help you survive enemies that would otherwise kill you.

Why Skill Point Hybrids Are Usually Better

In many situations, Skill Point hybrids provide more value than mixing two completely different buffs together.

For example, you might create a hybrid that combines two different bonuses. While that sounds useful, you may get more value from making a hybrid with two copies of the same Skill Point fish and then using your regular fish slots to supply the missing bonuses.

Skill Point bonuses are particularly valuable because of how the bonuses are applied.

Using three regular fish slots for Parrot Damage can give you less overall value than using those same three slots for Skill Point bonuses alongside a Skill Point hybrid.

If you need every fish slot available just to reach enough damage to kill an enemy, it can also mean your character is too fragile and may die in only a few hits.

In that situation, I would rather drop down a level, use your available slots for Skill Point boosts, and farm more SP efficiently.

The Breeding Lake is much more than a simple system for combining two fish. You are managing rarity, Shiny chances, breeding time, Lineage, and the actual usefulness of the resulting buffs.

My main recommendations are:

  • Unlock the Nest before worrying about breeding.
  • Prioritize Twig-generating upgrades so you can reach the Lake faster.
  • Buy the Hatchery Nursery when you can afford it if you plan to breed frequently.
  • Remember that both parent fish are consumed.
  • Higher-rarity parents generally give better chances for higher-rarity hybrids.
  • Use Shiny parents when you are specifically chasing Shiny hybrids.
  • Keep track of Shiny Progress because it is tied to the specific hybrid and parents.
  • Use your Birb’s fishing setup to match the biome or species of the breeding parents when trying to reduce breeding time.
  • Do not automatically fuse every new hybrid into your saved hybrid.
  • Compare a new hybrid’s rarity with the Lineage progress it would provide.
  • Remember that Shiny status and rarity are separate attributes.
  • For general progression, two copies of your best Skill Point fish are usually the strongest hybrid choice.
  • Consider Damage or HP hybrids as utility options when your current progression requires them.

Once you understand how these systems interact, you can stop relying entirely on luck and start deliberately building toward the hybrids you actually want.
