The latest Dead Rails update introduces a brand-new enemy type called the Mummy Zombie along with a new environmental feature called the Oasis. While the update isn’t massive, it adds more variety to desert exploration and slightly changes how players gather water during their journey.
Here’s everything included in the Mummy Update and what it means for gameplay.
New Mummy Zombies
The biggest addition in this update is the arrival of Mummy Zombies.
These enemies only appear during a specific weather event known as the Dust Storm. Once the storm begins, mummies start spawning throughout the map and attack players just like regular zombies.
Visually, they look very different from standard zombies, wrapped in bandages like classic Egyptian mummies. However, their behaviour is almost identical to the normal zombie enemies already found in the game.
When Do Mummy Zombies Spawn?
Mummy Zombies are tied to the Dust Storm weather event.
- They only appear while a Dust Storm is active.
- Once the storm ends, the mummies disappear along with the event.
- Outside of Dust Storms, you won’t encounter them.
This makes them a temporary environmental hazard rather than a permanent enemy.
Mummy Zombie Health
Testing shows that Mummy Zombies have roughly the same amount of health as regular zombies.
For example:
- A shovel defeats them in about the same number of hits as a normal zombie.
- They don’t appear to have increased durability.
- They don’t have armour or damage resistance.
If you’re already comfortable fighting regular zombies, you shouldn’t have any trouble dealing with mummies.
Mummy Zombie Damage
Their attacks are also very similar to normal zombies.
From testing:
- They deal approximately the same damage per hit.
- Their attack speed feels unchanged.
- They don’t inflict poison, bleeding, curses, or any other status effects.
Despite their unique appearance, they’re essentially another zombie variant rather than a stronger enemy.
Movement Speed
One noticeable difference is their movement.
Mummy Zombies walk fairly slowly, making them easy to avoid in open areas.
This slower speed gives players extra time to:
- line up headshots,
- reload weapons,
- retreat if overwhelmed.
Even when several spawn together, they’re generally not difficult to outrun.
Rifle Damage Test
Using a Rifle against the new enemies gives the same results as standard zombies.
A single headshot is enough to eliminate a Mummy Zombie instantly.
This confirms that they don’t have additional health or special defensive mechanics.
Most firearms remain just as effective against them as they are against every other zombie.
Spawn Rate
Although Mummy Zombies aren’t stronger, they appear in much larger numbers.
During a Dust Storm, you may notice multiple mummies spawning within a short period.
Because of this:
- players can become surrounded more easily,
- travelling during Dust Storms becomes more dangerous,
- having enough ammunition is more important than before.
Individually they’re weak, but large groups can still become a threat.
New Oasis Feature
The second major addition replaces one of the game’s existing environmental features.
Previously, players could find water puddles scattered around the desert.
These have now been replaced by Oases.
An Oasis is much larger and easier to spot than the old puddles, making water sources more noticeable while travelling.
Getting Wet
Walking into an Oasis applies a water effect to your character.
A message appears saying:
“You’re covered in water.”
This functions similarly to interacting with the previous puddles and confirms that your character has entered the water.
Collecting Water
One useful improvement is the ability to collect water directly from the Oasis.
Using an empty container, such as a Glass Bottle, allows you to fill it with water.
This makes Oases a much more practical resource than the older puddles.
Instead of simply standing in water, players can now gather it for later use.
Better for the Old Faithful Train
The Oasis is especially useful if you’re using the Old Faithful Train.
Since water is easier to collect, keeping the train supplied becomes much more convenient during long journeys.
Instead of searching for tiny puddles, players can refill their water containers quickly whenever they find an Oasis.
Everything Added in the Update
- New Mummy Zombies that spawn during Dust Storm weather.
- Mummies have health and damage similar to normal zombies.
- A single Rifle headshot defeats them instantly.
- Mummies move slightly slower than standard zombies.
- Dust Storms generate large numbers of Mummy Zombies.
- Water puddles have been replaced by larger Oases.
- Oases allow players to become wet and collect water.
- Glass Bottles and other containers can be filled at an Oasis.
- The new water source makes supplying the Old Faithful Train much easier.
While the Mummy Update doesn’t introduce powerful new enemies or major gameplay mechanics, it improves the desert environment with themed weather events and more practical water sources. The Mummy Zombies add visual variety during Dust Storms, while the Oasis system makes gathering water much more convenient for exploration and train management.
