How to Unlock Seed Research
Seed Research becomes available after the Plant Analyzer tutorial. Some seeds are immediately available, while others require you to find their corresponding Seed Specimen and submit it to Alchemy.
One important tip: don’t process your first Seed Specimen immediately. Give it to Alchemy first to unlock the relevant research entry. Afterward, additional specimens can be processed through the Plant Analyzer to obtain regular seeds.

How Gene Machines Work
Gene machines let you create, copy, extract, and combine crop traits.
Gene Activation Chamber: Places a seed through a one-day process and rolls an eligible trait. Existing traits are removed before the new roll.
Seed Compressor: Converts a gene-bearing harvested crop back into its seed. Natural traits and Hope are guaranteed to remain, while other traits are determined through inheritance.
Gene Extractor: Converts a non-cloned gene-bearing seed into a Composite Gene Capsule after four hours. The capsule retains the seed’s complete trait combination.
Gene Replicator: Copies a seed or capsule onto normal matching seeds. Seeds created with non-natural traits become clones, and their crops carry Infertility.
Gene Synthesizer: Combines two seeds or gene capsules in 10 minutes. The resulting item can have up to three different traits.
A seed can have a maximum of three traits, including its natural trait.

Advanced Gene Traits
Six traits become available after completing the Biomass Directory terraforming function at Vulture Citadel:

Unlocking these traits changes the odds inside the Gene Activation Chamber because the machine includes the newly available traits in its pool.
Gene Activation Odds
The Gene Activation Chamber’s percentages aren’t fixed across every crop. The seed determines which traits can appear and how likely each one is.
For example, Endyam Seed initially has a 47.4% chance of producing Keratinized, while Charge has a 13.2% chance and Windborne has a 10.5% chance. Once all advanced traits are unlocked, the Keratinized chance falls to 45%.

Best Gene Traits to Look For
If you’re trying to build stronger crops rather than simply collect every gene, a few traits stand out.
Turritopsis is excellent for repeatable crops because it can reset a harvested plant back to its seed stage without consuming one of its normal harvests.
Fractal Crop is particularly valuable on crops with high multi-fruit yields. It adds 40% of the rolled base yield, making it especially interesting for crops such as Strawberry, Tomato, Potato, and Grape.
Extended Bloom is useful when you want additional harvests, although the 30% growth penalty means it works best when you can offset the slower growth.
Unbridled Growth is one of the simplest productivity traits, providing a flat 30% growth-speed increase.
Gift of time can be extremely valuable on long-lived shrub crops because it adds another produce for every 28 days the plant survives.
Fortitude is useful when you don’t want to replace seasonal crops. It lets crops survive outside their normal growing months, though they grow at half speed during the off-season.
For specialized farming, Fertility Boost, Symbiotic Nourishment, Even Rain, Aerial Roots, and Highly Oxygenated can also be useful depending on how your farm is arranged.
Overall, the gene system is about combining the right crop with the right trait rather than simply chasing the rarest gene. For production-focused farms, prioritize traits that increase yield, extend harvests, reduce downtime, or improve growth speed.
