Gifting becomes especially important if you’re pursuing romance. You can give each NPC one gift per day, and giving them something they genuinely enjoy helps increase their Heart Level faster. Birthdays are even more important because a good birthday gift provides a bigger relationship boost.
With the 1.0 update raising the NPC Heart Level cap to 10 Hearts and adding proposals, marriage, and post-marriage content, there’s now even more reason to keep your favorite characters happy.

Gifts fall into several categories:
Loved Gifts – The best possible choices and provide a strong relationship boost.
Liked Gifts – Not quite as valuable as Loved Gifts, but still excellent for regular gifting.
Neutral Gifts – Items that aren’t specifically loved, liked, disliked, hated, or banned.
Disliked Gifts – These negatively affect the reception of your present.
Hated Gifts – Particularly bad choices that can trigger unique dialogue.
Banned Gifts – Items considered inappropriate or harmful for a particular NPC. The game won’t allow you to give these items to that character.
Most characters dislike generic Junk, Bugs, and Weird Gifts, although there are plenty of exceptions.

This is the approach I’d use rather than blindly chasing rare Loved Gifts.
For example, giving Valen a Beet is ridiculously easy once you’re growing them. Ryis loves Hard Wood, and Celine likes such a huge variety of flowers that you’ll frequently stumble across something suitable just by exploring.
March is another easy one once you’re regularly mining. Keep some spare Copper or Iron Ore instead of selling absolutely everything.
Best Loved Gifts to Stockpile
If you’re serious about raising friendships across the entire town, start keeping a small gifting chest rather than searching for presents every morning.
Some particularly useful items are worth stockpiling because they’re easy to obtain or work for multiple villagers.
Coffee is excellent because several characters either Love or Like it.
Flowers are useful for Celine and several other villagers.
Ore is perfect for March, Olric, Errol, and several mining-oriented characters.
Wood, Hard Wood, Clay, Stone, and Paper work surprisingly well for characters such as Landen, Ryis, Merri, and Dell.
Animal products are great once your ranch is established, particularly for Hayden and several other NPCs.
And don’t underestimate ordinary crops.
Valen loving Beets and Holt loving Potatoes means you can turn basic farming into an endless supply of relationship points without sacrificing expensive cooked meals.
Save Loved Gifts for Birthdays
If you’ve got a rare Loved Gift and aren’t in a hurry, consider saving it for the NPC’s birthday.
Birthday gifting provides an increased relationship boost, making that rare item considerably more valuable than handing it over on some random Tuesday.
For everyday gifting, a cheap Liked Gift is often perfectly adequate.
Then bring out the good stuff on birthdays.
This becomes particularly useful when you’re pushing a romanceable character toward the new 10-Heart cap.
Don’t Assume Junk Is Universally Hated
Most villagers dislike categories such as Junk, Bugs, or Weird Gifts.
But Fields of Mistria loves exceptions.
Luc adores several insects.
Dozy likes Sod.
Landen likes building materials that other people would consider junk.
Olric will happily accept Stone.
So rather than thinking “this item is worthless,” think about who might actually want it.
That’s one of the nicer things about Mistria’s gifting system. Items you’d normally sell for almost nothing can occasionally become convenient friendship gifts.
Keep Banned Gifts Away From Children and Animals
Banned Gifts are different from hated gifts.
A Hated Gift can generally still be handed over—you’ll just get an understandably unhappy reaction.
A Banned Gift is something the game considers inappropriate or harmful for that recipient, so you won’t be allowed to give it to them.
For example, alcohol and caffeine are banned for certain younger NPCs and animals, while chocolate is also restricted for some animal characters.
So if the game refuses to let you hand over an item, it isn’t necessarily a bug.
Best Way to Raise Hearts Fast in Fields of Mistria
Don’t rely exclusively on gifts.
Talk to the NPCs regularly and give them a suitable gift each day, preferably something Loved or Liked.
Pay particular attention to birthdays and use those opportunities for your better Loved Gifts.
If you’re pursuing one of the romanceable characters, dates are now even more useful in Version 1.0 because taking an NPC on a date provides an increased Heart Level boost.
Once you’ve reached 10 Hearts with someone you’re dating, you’ll be able to move into their Proposal Event and eventually unlock the Engagement Ring recipe.
So if marriage is your ultimate goal, I’d choose your favorite character early, identify one or two easy renewable gifts they enjoy, and start stockpiling.
You don’t need to spend every morning cooking a five-star meal.
Sometimes all true love requires is handing Valen another Beet.
