Outlast 2 Review

It’s been two years since the release of Outlast 2. On release, it quickly grew and became insanely popular. It even broke many records and caught the attention of the media multiple times. But the real question here is, should you buy Outlast 2? Let’s find out.

While Outlast 2 is a survival game, I can assure you it’s not for the faint of heart. When I first played it I instantly knew it was a horror game because of the many jumps scares, the atmosphere and theme. It is set in the middle of nowhere where it’s never light and it always dark and gloomy. The game never fails to give you the chills. I also definitely do not recommend playing Outlast 2 in the dark. I can assure you if you are looking for some good horror content, Outlast will provide you with some spooky stuff.

The storyline is based on a husband and wife who’s helicopter crashes in the middle of nowhere and they both are unfortunately separated. They soon realise their environment is filled with monsters, evil people and psychopaths. They must go through a journey to reunite with each other. At the very end, the husband gets quite a shock. Don’t worry, I won’t spoil it for you.

Outlast 2 is a much more open world compared to the original, which is fabulous. There are many more outdoor scenes with high grass and trees that make it easier to run from enemies towards safety. The map, in general, is a big upgrade compared to the original Outlast.

The game is filled with many emotional scenes. Outlast 2 will make you feel anxious, horrified, sad and scared at different points. Outlast 2 is good at changing your emotion as you progress towards the end of the game. Outlast also handles tension really well. At multiple points during the game, I was on the edge of my seat as I played. Outlast genuinely told the story well and it drew me in from the very beginning.

As you play through the game you also have to make many difficult decisions that affect the game in multiple different ways which makes it enjoyable and interactive. I love a game that I control.

You are often put in claustrophobic environments and you are buried multiple times. You also have to go through a narrow underground trail which leads to a monster. If you are extremely claustrophobic, this probably will scare you. Others might find this thrilling as I did.

Dying in Outlast is incredibly annoying. I mean really annoying. Especially when you are being chased and can’t find a way out. If you die over and over again, it can get to your head. If you rage a lot, be aware. I came close to throwing my controller across the room multiple times.

You also have to be aware of your camera’s batteries. You don’t wanna run out of them. Batteries are probably one of the most scarce resources in Outlast. Although it is annoying running low on batteries, it is a good mechanic and I enjoyed using it a lot.

I admired the graphics in Outlast 2. The quality is amazing. Every time I play the game I notice a new detail I had never noticed before. Red Barrels also did an incredible job with the lighting. It must have taken them years to get the lighting so well done. Since the graphics and lighting are top-notch, it makes me want to return and play more.

Some people have complained that they feel Outlast is a bit repetitive. They feel as if they are just running around in circles all game doing the exact same thing. I guess this factor depends on how easily you get bored.

Of course, Outlast 2 is rated 18+ because of the massive jump scares, a lot of swearing, harsh violence and sexual scenes. If you don’t like the above, Outlast is not for you.

Outlast has a price tag of just 15 pounds and has a length of around 10 hours which seems pretty decent. Also, you get to choose the difficulty level which is a bonus.

To run Outlast 2 on PC, you will need at minimum an Intel Core i3-530, 4GB ram, ATI Radeon HD 4870 and 30GB of storage. You can purchase and download Outlast on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, Windows and Mac. You can also buy Outlast 2 in many popular video game stores.

It’s also worth noting that Red Barrels has confirmed Outlast 3 will be a thing which is good news for fans of the video games. In fact, it should be released quite soon. The news was originally announced last year.

In conclusion, in my opinion, Outlast 2 is worth the money. It is not expensive, you get an emotional yet scary storyline, good graphics, heart-stopping jump scares along with good performance. If you think you can handle it, then download it. Overall the game was a fun, interactive experience that gives you the chills.
