Legacy of Defense Beginner Guide – Classes, Builds

Welcome to our Legacy of Defense 100% achievements and endgame guide. If you are working your way through the campaign and want to understand what you need for all 75 Steam achievements, this guide will help you follow the progression without missing anything.

In this post, we’ll cover the early game, classes and builds, campaign bosses, Mastery, companions, Collection, Skill Codex, Endless, Abyss 1–20, rare encounters, the Princess, Loop Tower, and the complete 100% route.

The good news is that nothing is missable, and everything can be completed on one save. The campaign and six class clears are only part of the journey; the longer endgame goals include Abyss 20, the Skill Codex, Egg 5, Black Armor 5, Punish, Princess, and Loop Tower.

Legacy of Defense Beginner Guide – Classes, Builds

Legacy of Defense is a side-scrolling defense game mixed with deck-building and roguelite mechanics.

You play as a hero defending a lane while enemies enter from the side. During a run, you use skills from your deck, spend mana, choose upgrades after fights, and use XP to improve stats such as attack, HP, dodge, and critical chance.

A typical run looks like this:

  • Pick a class and start with its class-specific kit.
  • Clear enemy waves.
  • Choose cards, skills, or upgrades after fights.
  • Spend XP between fights.
  • Visit shops and events between stages.
  • Remove cards that are no longer useful.
  • Build around the strengths of your class.
  • Defeat the stage boss.
  • Continue toward the final stage, Endless, or Abyss.

Game Modes

There are several modes to work through as you progress.

Campaign

The Campaign takes you through areas such as the Forest, Wasteland, Cave, and later maps.

It unlocks important systems including Mastery, companions, Collection, and additional content.

The final-stage clear is also what the Skilled achievements require for each of the six base classes.

Endless

Endless becomes available after progressing far enough through the Campaign.

For the Endless Loop achievement, you only need to clear Endless Mode 1+.

Later Endless stages become much more difficult because of Whisper, HP pressure, and performance issues.

Abyss

Abyss contains floors from 1 to 20, with an achievement for each floor.

The deeper floors also contain special encounters and enemies, including the Giant Centipede, deeper Goblin Assassin, Flesh Heap, and Tenacity.

Loop Tower

Loop Tower becomes available after progressing through the Princess line.

The Or Not…? achievement is connected to entering or starting the Loop Tower.

Permanent Progression Systems

Your progress isn’t limited to individual runs. Several permanent systems continue helping you as you play.

Mastery

Mastery gives you account-wide passive improvements.

Once you unlock it, continue investing in it as you play. Attack speed, critical chance, and mana recovery are good early priorities, followed by HP.

If later classes feel much easier than your first few runs, Mastery progression is a big reason why.

Companions

Your first companion unlocks the Companion achievement.

After that, choose companions based on what your current class needs.

You can use one to help cover a weakness such as tanking, wave clearing, or sustain.

Collection

Collection tracks the enemies you have registered.

The progression is:

  • Collection 1 — Register one enemy.
  • Collection 2 — Register 10 enemies.
  • Collection 3 — Register half of the Collection.
  • Collection 4 — Register all enemies.

If you are stuck around the halfway point, you are likely missing enemies from later Campaign areas, Abyss, or rare encounters.

Skill Codex

The Skill Codex requires you to learn every skill at least once.

This is important because Collector means filling the entire Codex, not simply building one powerful deck.

If you always pick the same skills, you can easily delay this achievement.

On farming runs, try taking unfamiliar skills when they appear so you can gradually fill the Codex.

Egg

The Egg has an upgrade track that needs to reach level 5 for the Hatching achievement.

This is a long-term gold and material investment, so it makes sense to work on it while farming Endless or Abyss rather than treating it as a completely separate objective.

Black Armor

Black Armor also has an upgrade track.

Reach level 5 for the Pitch Black achievement.

Like the Egg, this is something you can work toward gradually while completing other endgame content.

Punish

Punish is a specific skill that you need to learn for its achievement.

If you keep skipping unfamiliar skills, you can delay this one, so keep checking your available skill choices.

Early Game Tips

Your first few runs are better used for learning and unlocking systems than trying to create a perfect deck.

Use Your First Runs for Unlocks

Don’t worry if your early deck isn’t perfect.

Use your first runs to:

  • Die for the first death achievement.
  • Defeat Chicken.
  • Defeat Mutant.
  • Unlock Mastery.
  • Meet a companion.
  • Register your first Collection entry.

You will naturally learn more about the game while doing these.

Spend XP on Attack First

Early on, putting XP into attack is a reliable choice.

More damage helps you clear waves before enemies build up.

After attack, dodge becomes useful for avoiding rushes from enemies such as Boar King.

If you start getting defeated by a single hit, add HP instead.

Keep Your Deck Thin

One of the easiest mistakes is collecting every interesting card you see.

Try to keep your deck focused.

If you have starter cards that you never use, remove them when possible. A smaller deck makes it easier to draw the cards your build actually depends on.

I found that a deck with a clear purpose is much more reliable than a huge collection of random powerful-looking cards.

Build Your Mana Engine

Big skills are only useful if you can actually afford to play them.

If you can’t play an expensive card more than once during an important fight, it can become dead weight.

Take mana recovery and cheaper attacks when necessary, then build toward your larger skills once the engine works.

Bring Shield Break Against Armor

Some enemies, especially the Giant Golem and other stone or armored enemies, can heavily reduce normal damage.

Against these enemies, look for armor pierce, shield-break, or strong single-target damage.

Knight is an easy answer for this type of fight.

If you bring a deck that only deals small amounts of normal damage, an armored boss can turn the fight into a wall.

Use Potions When You Need Them

Don’t save every potion forever.

If a boss is consistently defeating you, use your potion on that boss.

In Endless, it is generally better to save potions for bosses rather than using them on ordinary enemies.

Use Speed-Up Carefully

Speed-up is useful when farming content you already understand.

For a new boss, I recommend slowing things down until you know its attacks and timing.

Once you understand the fight, you can turn the speed back up.

First Campaign Boss Chain

You will encounter these bosses naturally while pushing through the Campaign:

  • Chicken
  • Mutant
  • Boar King
  • King Slime
  • Giant Mushroom
  • Giant Zombie Mushroom
  • Ogre
  • Goblin Assassin
  • Giant Golem
  • Mutant Slimeman
  • Dark Skeleton – Sword
  • Later map bosses

If a stage feels impossible, the problem is usually one of three things: your Mastery is too low, your deck is too large, or your build does not have the type of damage the boss requires.

Rather than spending all your gold trying to repair a bad run, resetting and starting with a better build can be much more effective.

Classes and Builds

There are six base classes, and each one has a Skilled achievement.

To unlock each Skilled achievement, you need to clear the final stage with that class.

The Hero Pack DLC adds additional flavor, but the base 100% route only requires the six main classes.

Hunter

Hunter is a ranged class focused on archery and wave clearing.

For an easier final-stage clear, stack attack speed and AoE while maintaining distance from enemies.

Hunter can struggle if a boss reaches you and you haven’t invested in enough HP.

Warrior

Warrior focuses on melee pressure.

It is a simple class to learn, making it a good choice when you’re still figuring out boss patterns.

Stack attack and some sustain.

Don’t completely ignore defense, though. If you stand directly inside every boss attack, pure damage won’t save the run.

Knight

Knight focuses on HP, defense, and shield-breaking.

It is particularly useful for the Cave, Giant Golem, and other enemies that reduce normal damage.

A useful approach is to build defense, healing, and armor pierce before adding critical chance to prevent fights from becoming unnecessarily long.

The downside is that Knight can feel slow if you don’t have enough draw or mana.

Thief

Thief focuses on dodge and critical hits.

When the dodge actually works, Thief can be extremely strong in Endless and long runs.

Stack dodge early and then build around attacks that benefit from dodging.

The weakness is low HP. One failed dodge can sometimes end the run, so keeping at least one shield or healing option can prevent a single mistake from becoming an instant death.

Alchemist

Alchemist revolves around potions, damage-over-time effects, and its unusual resource system.

Don’t try to force a Warrior-style deck onto the Alchemist.

Instead, play around its own kit, focusing on sustain and status effects before adding a strong finisher.

If the class feels confusing at first, it can be worth clearing the other five classes and returning later with more Mastery and Codex skills unlocked.

Wizard

Wizard focuses on AoE and status effects such as burn and freeze.

It is excellent at clearing groups of enemies, but mana is extremely important.

If you skip mana cards, the deck can stop functioning properly.

Wizard is also relatively fragile.

If your Wizard class clear doesn’t register on an older demo-to-full save, update the game and clear the final stage again.

Build Rules That Matter

There are a few simple rules I try to follow when building a run.

Give Your Run One Identity

Build around one main idea.

For example:

  • Dodge
  • Armor
  • AoE

A hybrid build can work, but trying to build around five different ideas usually leaves you with a deck that doesn’t do any of them well.

Remove Bad Cards

Every card takes up space in your deck.

If a card isn’t contributing to your build, consider removing it.

Match Damage to the Enemy

Use the right tool for the situation.

  • Golem and armored enemies — Use pierce.
  • Large groups — Use AoE.
  • Single assassins or wolves — Use burst, stun, or slow when available.

Be Careful With Whisper

Whisper and other maximum-HP taxes can become extremely dangerous in Endless.

Don’t automatically take them unless the other choices would completely ruin your run.

Stacked Whisper effects can cause an Endless run to collapse even when the rest of your build is strong.

Don’t Depend on One Shield

Defense Stance and shields can be stripped by bullet-hell bosses.

If your entire survival strategy depends on one shield, the run can fall apart when the boss removes it.

Campaign Boss Guide

Every named boss achievement is generally earned by defeating that enemy once.

Collection also requires you to register enemies, so don’t intentionally skip new enemies when you encounter them.

Chicken and Mutant

These are early enemies and should be straightforward.

You will encounter them naturally while progressing through the Campaign.

Boar King

Boar King is a rushing enemy.

Use dodge or stun to deal with the charge and use AoE if additional enemies appear.

King Slime

King Slime can split or change its body.

Once the fight creates multiple targets, AoE becomes particularly useful.

Giant Mushroom

Giant Mushroom uses poison.

You can either bring healing and HP to survive the damage-over-time effects or kill it quickly before the poison becomes overwhelming.

Avoid standing in the poison cloud.

Giant Zombie Mushroom

This works similarly to the Giant Mushroom but is more dangerous.

Bring sustain and be ready to deal with the stronger version of the poison pressure.

Ogre

Ogre is a large melee enemy.

Shield-breaking can help, or you can focus on surviving its attacks with enough defense and healing.

Goblin Assassin

Goblin Assassin is an early campaign encounter.

Later, a deeper version is connected to the Blade of Vengeance achievement, so don’t confuse the two.

Giant Golem

Giant Golem is one of the most important armor checks.

Normal attacks can deal very little damage against it.

Bring armor pierce or shield-break effects. Knight is also a strong choice.

A pure damage-over-time chip deck can struggle badly here.

Mutant Slimeman

Mutant Slimeman combines slime and mutant-style mechanics.

AoE is useful, and you should avoid allowing enemies to surround you.

Dark Skeleton – Sword

This is a melee skeleton elite.

Try to burst down the sword user before additional enemies can build up around you.

Beholder

Beholder uses ranged attacks and a beam.

Dodge or shield its major attack while clearing additional enemies.

Snow Bear, Giant Wolf, and Mammoth

These later-map beasts require different approaches.

  • Giant Wolf is fast.
  • Mammoth has a large amount of HP.
  • Snow Bear hits extremely hard.

Match your defensive approach to the enemy rather than trying to half-build both dodge and armor.

Elite Gremlin

Elite Gremlin is a smaller elite enemy.

Try to kill it before it has time to snowball.

Giant Worm

Giant Worm has a long body and burrowing behavior.

Use AoE against the segments and save burst damage for the head.

Giant Guardian

The Giant Guardian is one of the major Campaign walls and includes a special dialogue encounter.

Guardian’s Roar 1–6

The six Guardian’s Roar achievements appear through dialogue during the Giant Guardian encounter.

The important thing is to let the dialogue lines play.

Don’t immediately skip through the encounter or alt-tab through the first clear.

The six lines correspond to:

  • Guardian’s Roar 1 — “You shall not pass!!”
  • Guardian’s Roar 2 — “You’re not there yet!!”
  • Guardian’s Roar 3 — “You’re tougher than I thought…”
  • Guardian’s Roar 4 — “I’m not alone…”
  • Guardian’s Roar 5 — “I will guard it till the end!!”
  • Guardian’s Roar 6 — “…”

Giant Guardian

How to unlock: Defeat the Giant Guardian.

This is the normal defeat achievement for the encounter.

Judgment

How to unlock: Be judged by the Giant Guardian.

This is separate from simply killing the Guardian.

If you kill the Guardian but don’t receive Judgment, replay the fight.

Let the roar dialogue play and take the judgment outcome when it is offered.

Final Stage and Skilled Achievements

The final stage needs to be cleared once with each of the six base classes.

The achievements are:

  • Skilled Hunter
  • Skilled Warrior
  • Skilled Knight
  • Skilled Thief
  • Skilled Alchemist
  • Skilled Wizard

Hunter, Warrior, and Knight are generally the easier classes to start with.

Thief becomes much better once its dodge build is working.

Alchemist and Wizard depend more heavily on their specific resources and class mechanics.

If a Skilled achievement doesn’t register, update the game and clear the final stage again with that class.

Endless Mode

Once Endless becomes available, you only need to clear the required starting stage for Endless Loop.

Endless Loop

How to unlock: Clear Endless Mode 1+.

You don’t need to push extremely deep into Endless just for this achievement.

For longer Endless runs, Thief dodge and Knight armor are strong options.

Wizard can struggle once Whisper begins reducing your maximum HP.

Whisper

Be careful with Whisper and maximum-HP penalties.

If you stack too many of these effects, your run can collapse even if your damage is excellent.

Unless the alternative choice is even worse, skipping Whisper-related HP taxes is usually safer.

Potions in Endless

Save your potions for bosses.

Using everything on normal enemies can leave you without enough resources when a difficult boss appears.

Endless Performance

High Endless stages can become a performance problem.

If the game begins hitching badly, especially around later stages, reduce the speed-up or stop pushing further.

The guide notes that this is a known performance wall rather than a hidden mechanic.

The exit button has also been patched so that it can keep your progress, so you don’t need to force-kill the game process.

Abyss 1–20

Abyss has 20 floors, and each floor has its own achievement.

You need to clear:

  • To the Abyss 1
  • To the Abyss 2
  • To the Abyss 3
  • To the Abyss 4
  • To the Abyss 5
  • To the Abyss 6
  • To the Abyss 7
  • To the Abyss 8
  • To the Abyss 9
  • To the Abyss 10
  • To the Abyss 11
  • To the Abyss 12
  • To the Abyss 13
  • To the Abyss 14
  • To the Abyss 15
  • To the Abyss 16
  • To the Abyss 17
  • To the Abyss 18
  • To the Abyss 19
  • To the Abyss 20

Abyss Floors 1–4

These early floors are primarily a Mastery check.

If you can’t hold Abyss 1, it is better to return to the Campaign, improve your Mastery, and get another class final-stage clear before forcing deeper Abyss progression.

Abyss Floor 5

Floor 5 can become a common wall.

Bring pierce and either dodge or another reliable defensive option so you don’t get overwhelmed.

Deeper Abyss

The deeper floors introduce additional rare encounters and bosses.

Floors beyond the early section are much easier once your Egg, Black Armor, Skill Codex, and Mastery progression are established.

Abyss Floor 20

Abyss 20 is the final Abyss achievement.

The same basic rules continue to apply: keep your deck focused, build around one identity, avoid unnecessary HP taxes, and make sure your permanent progression is developed before repeatedly throwing yourself at the floor.

Abyss Rare Bosses

Several achievements are tied to special encounters in deeper Abyss content.

Form of Terror

How to unlock: Defeat the Giant Centipede.

This is a deeper Abyss encounter rather than the standard early Giant Worm fight.

Blade of Vengeance

How to unlock: Defeat Goblin Assassin on a deeper Abyss floor.

This is different from simply defeating the Goblin Assassin during the Campaign.

You need to encounter the deeper version.

Shell

How to unlock: Defeat the Flesh Heap.

Find and defeat the Flesh Heap during the relevant Abyss content.

Tenacity

How to unlock: Face Tenacity.

The encounter itself is important for the achievement.

Make sure you finish the fight after triggering the encounter.

Princess and Loop Tower

The Princess progression comes after the major Campaign content.

Princess Rescued!

How to unlock: Rescue the Princess.

Continue pushing the story and later maps after the Giant Guardian rather than focusing only on Endless.

The Princess achievement is part of the later progression.

Or Not…?

How to unlock: Enter or start the Loop Tower.

After progressing through the Princess line, continue to the Loop Tower.

This unlocks the Or Not…? achievement.

Loop Tower is one of the major endgame activities, so approach it like a more demanding version of Endless: keep your deck thin, avoid unnecessary Whisper stacks, and use a class with a build you are comfortable playing.

100% Achievement Route

You don’t need to attack the hardest Abyss floors immediately.

Following the game’s progression makes the entire 100% process much smoother.

1. Start Your First Run

Work toward:

  • Enter the Game
  • Death
  • Chicken
  • Mutant
  • Mastery
  • Companion
  • Collection 1

Your first runs are mainly about unlocking systems and learning the game.

2. Push Through the Campaign

Continue through the Campaign and defeat the early and mid-game bosses.

You should naturally pick up several boss achievements along the way.

Death-related achievements and early boss-count achievements will also progress.

3. Complete the Giant Guardian Dialogue

During your first serious Giant Guardian attempt, let all six Guardian’s Roar lines play.

This gives you the best chance of collecting the six dialogue achievements without needing unnecessary replays.

4. Defeat the Giant Guardian

Kill the Giant Guardian for its achievement.

Then check whether Judgment also registered.

If it didn’t, replay the fight specifically for the judgment event.

5. Enter Endless

Once Endless becomes available, clear the first required stage for Endless Loop.

You don’t need to turn this into a deep Endless grind immediately.

6. Keep Farming Bosses

Continue completing Campaign and Abyss content.

The Champion and Ancestor achievements require 50 and 100 boss defeats respectively, so they are better treated as passive progression rather than separate farming projects.

7. Clear the Final Stage With All Six Classes

Complete the final stage as:

  • Hunter
  • Warrior
  • Knight
  • Thief
  • Alchemist
  • Wizard

This gives you all six Skilled achievements.

8. Complete the Collection

Work through Collection 2 and Collection 3 as you encounter new enemies.

Leave Collection 4 until you’ve reached the later Campaign and Abyss content so you can fill the remaining rare entries.

9. Start Abyss Progression

Work through Abyss 1–5 and look for the relevant rare encounters, including:

  • Giant Centipede
  • Deeper Goblin Assassin
  • Flesh Heap
  • Tenacity

10. Work on Long-Term Upgrades

At the same time, progress toward:

  • Egg level 5
  • Black Armor level 5
  • Punish
  • Full Skill Codex

These are best completed alongside normal farming rather than as completely separate grinds.

11. Clear Abyss 6–20

Once your permanent upgrades are strong enough, continue through the remaining Abyss floors.

If you repeatedly fail a floor, stop and improve Mastery, Egg, Armor, or your deck rather than repeatedly forcing the same failed build.

12. Finish the Princess and Loop Tower Progression

Rescue the Princess and then progress into Loop Tower.

This completes the final part of the endgame progression.

Death Achievements

Several achievements are earned simply by dying.

Death

How to unlock: Die for the first time.

You will naturally get this during early experimentation if you don’t already receive it through your first failed run.

Get Up!

How to unlock: Die 5 or more times.

Keep playing normally.

There is no need to intentionally farm this unless you somehow avoid dying repeatedly.

Death Expert

How to unlock: Die 10 or more times.

Again, this should happen naturally while learning classes, bosses, Endless, and Abyss.

Boss Count Achievements

These also build naturally over time.

Slayer

How to unlock: Defeat 10 bosses.

Champion

How to unlock: Defeat 50 bosses.

Ancestor

How to unlock: Defeat 100 bosses.

You shouldn’t need to create a dedicated farming plan for these.

Class clears, Abyss progression, Endless runs, and normal endgame farming will gradually increase your boss count.

Collection Achievements

Collection 1

How to unlock: Register an enemy for the first time.

You’ll get this almost immediately once you start registering enemies.

Collection 2

How to unlock: Register 10 enemies.

Continue progressing through the Campaign and register new enemies as you encounter them.

Collection 3

How to unlock: Complete half of the Collection.

If you aren’t at half yet, continue through later Campaign areas.

Collection 4

How to unlock: Collect all enemies.

This is one of the later Collection achievements because the final entries can come from Abyss and rare encounters.

If you’re stuck, open the Collection book and look for the missing silhouettes rather than randomly replaying early Campaign stages.

Skill Codex and Collector

Punish

How to unlock: Learn the Punish skill.

Take the skill when it appears.

If you’ve been skipping unfamiliar skills for a long time, check your Skill Codex and deliberately take new options during farming runs.

Collector

How to unlock: Fill the entire Skill Codex.

This is one of the longer collection goals.

Don’t keep selecting the same handful of skills simply because they are part of your strongest build.

During safer farming runs, use the opportunity to learn skills you haven’t registered yet.

Egg and Black Armor Achievements

Hatching

How to unlock: Reach Egg level 5.

Continue investing in the Egg upgrade track until it reaches level 5.

This is a long-term resource sink, so work toward it while doing other content.

Pitch Black

How to unlock: Reach Black Armor level 5.

Upgrade Black Armor to level 5.

As with the Egg, you don’t need to stop everything else and farm exclusively for this. Keep progressing through the game and put the required resources into the upgrade whenever possible.

Endgame Checklist

Once you feel like you’ve finished the main game, check these goals before calling your 100% run complete:

  • All six Skilled class clears.
  • Collection 4 completed.
  • Full Skill Codex.
  • Egg level 5.
  • Black Armor level 5.
  • Punish learned.
  • Abyss 20 cleared.
  • Princess rescued.
  • Loop Tower started.
  • Remaining Mastery upgrades collected.
  • Boss-count achievements completed.

Getting 100% in Legacy of Defense is less about one perfect run and more about steadily building your account.

The Campaign, six class clears, Collection, Skill Codex, Mastery, Egg, Black Armor, Abyss, and Loop Tower all contribute to the overall journey. The good news is that nothing is missable, so you can always return to unfinished achievements on the same save.

For your first hours, focus on learning the classes, keeping your decks thin, spending XP wisely, and matching your build to the enemies you are fighting. Once your permanent progression starts building up, the harder Abyss floors and endgame systems become much more manageable.

The biggest long-term goals are Abyss 20, full Skill Codex, Egg 5, Black Armor 5, Punish, Princess Rescued!, and Loop Tower. Work on those alongside your normal runs instead of treating each one as a completely separate grind, and the road to 100% becomes much easier to manage.
