MapleStory Classic Bowman Build Guide – Leveling (1–30)

If you enjoy attacking monsters from a safe distance instead of fighting them face-to-face, Bowman is one of the best classes to try in MapleStory Classic World. This class focuses on DEX, has excellent Accuracy, and can attack enemies from farther away than most other classes.

In this guide, I’ll explain how to build your Bowman from level 1 to level 30, including the best AP allocation, skill progression, weapons, equipment, and training maps. I’ll also cover the differences between bows and crossbows so you can decide which weapon suits your playstyle.

The main thing to remember is that Bowmen are strongest when they have enough space to attack. Their HP is relatively low, and enemies that get too close can force you into melee attacks. With the right build and positioning, though, leveling becomes much smoother.

MapleStory Classic Bowman Guide – Best Build, Skills, AP, and Leveling (1–30)

Bowman is a strong choice if you like ranged combat and want to keep monsters away from your character. The class has excellent Accuracy and gains powerful critical-hit bonuses during the first job.

Bowman strengths

  • Excellent attack range: You can hit monsters from a distance, and The Eye of Amazon extends your range even further.
  • High Accuracy: DEX and character level provide strong Accuracy, while Focus adds another useful bonus.
  • Strong critical hits: Critical Shot grants +20% Critical Rate and +15% Critical Damage at maximum level.
  • Flexible weapon choices: You can choose between bows and crossbows.
  • Good damage consistency: Arrow Blow is a reliable attack that works well for early leveling.

Bowman weaknesses

  • Limited mobbing before second job: Your early attacks are mainly designed for one target, although Double Shot can hit two monsters.
  • Low HP: Getting surrounded can be dangerous.
  • Bow whacking: When monsters get too close, your character can switch to a weak close-range attack instead of firing an arrow.
  • Arrow costs: You must keep buying or obtaining arrows as you train.
  • Positioning matters: You need enough room to shoot comfortably and avoid enemies.

My recommendation is to choose Bowman if you enjoy ranged gameplay and don’t mind paying attention to your position while fighting.

Best Bowman Stats and AP Allocation

DEX is the most important stat for a Bowman because it improves both damage and Accuracy. STR is your secondary stat, mainly used to meet weapon requirements and contribute to damage.

Stat Priority Purpose
DEX Highest Main damage stat and improves Accuracy
STR As required Helps meet weapon requirements and contributes to damage
INT Avoid adding AP Not needed for this build
LUK Avoid adding AP Offers less value than DEX for a standard Bowman

Levels 1–10: Put your AP into DEX

The example build starts with 5 STR, 12 DEX, 4 INT, and 4 LUK. From levels 2 through 10, put all 45 gained AP into DEX.

Level STR DEX INT LUK
1 5 12 4 4
2–9 5 52 4 4
10 5 57 4 4

At level 10, you’ll have 57 base DEX and 5 base STR.

You don’t need to add STR or DEX to qualify for the first job advancement in MapleStory Classic World. However, your weapon requirements still matter once you start upgrading your equipment.

Levels 10–30: Bow build vs. crossbow build

Your AP allocation changes slightly depending on which weapon you plan to use. Bows generally require more STR, while crossbows can let you invest more points into DEX.

Levels Bow build: STR / DEX Crossbow build: STR / DEX
10 5 / 57 5 / 57
15 15 / 72 5 / 82
20 20 / 92 10 / 102
25 25 / 112 15 / 122
30 30 / 132 20 / 142

These are sample base stats, not mandatory numbers for every character. Your equipment may provide some of the STR or DEX needed to equip a weapon.

Important: A weapon cannot use its own stats to meet its equipment requirements. Check your character’s stats before buying a weapon, and avoid adding extra STR if your next crossbow doesn’t require it.

Levels 1–10: Beginner to Bowman

Before becoming a Bowman, you’ll start on Maple Island as a Beginner. Complete the useful quests, collect your early rewards, and then travel to Victoria Island.

At level 10, head to Henesys and speak with Athena Pierce to advance to Bowman.

Beginner skills

You receive enough SP to max all three Beginner skills by level 10.

Skill Max Level Effect
Three Snails 3 Ranged shell attack
Recovery 3 Restores HP over time
Nimble Feet 3 Temporarily increases movement speed

You can level these skills in whichever order you prefer. Nimble Feet is handy for getting around, Three Snails provides a ranged attack before your job advancement, and Recovery offers some extra healing.

Best starting weapon

Use the Wooden Club through level 4, then switch to the Razor at level 5.

Weapon Weapon Attack Recommendation
Wooden Club 19 Good starting weapon for levels 1–4
Sword 17 Usable alternative
Hand Axe 17 Usable alternative
Razor 23 Recommended upgrade at level 5

The Wooden Club has a useful damage advantage against early Maple Island monsters. Once you can equip the Razor, its higher Weapon Attack makes it the better option.

Level 10 Bowman example

<text>Base stats: 5 STR / 57 DEX / 4 INT / 4 LUK</text>

With the example equipment, the character reaches:

  • 5 STR
  • 60 DEX
  • 30 Weapon Attack
  • 39 Accuracy
  • 444 HP
  • 363 MP

Your first-job skill setup starts with Arrow Blow at level 1, while Three Snails, Recovery, and Nimble Feet are all maxed.

The War Bow, arrows, and a suitable early hat are useful starting equipment once you’ve advanced.

Bowman Skills: The Best Build for Levels 10–30

Your main decision during the first job is whether to focus on Arrow Blow or Double Shot. Both can reach 240% total damage at maximum level, but they behave differently.

For this guide, I’ll focus on Arrow Blow because it costs less MP, uses fewer arrows, has greater range, and offers better knockback potential.

Recommended level 30 skill build

Skill Target Level What you get
Arrow Blow 20 240% damage for 14 MP and one arrow
Critical Shot 15 +20% Critical Rate and +15% Critical Damage
The Eye of Amazon 15 +120 px bow and crossbow range
Focus 10 +10 Accuracy and +14 Evasion for 170 seconds
Power Knockback 1 Close-range utility and knockback
Double Shot 0 Skipped in this build

This setup prioritizes your main attack, critical damage, and ranged advantage. Focus adds useful Accuracy and Evasion, while one point in Power Knockback gives you a way to push nearby monsters back.

If you prefer to push monsters away more often, you can take more points in Power Knockback instead of maxing Focus. I’ll explain that alternative below.

Arrow Blow vs. Double Shot

Both attacks have their uses, so it’s worth understanding the difference before spending your SP.

Feature Arrow Blow Double Shot
Maximum damage 240% in one hit 120% per arrow, two arrows
MP cost 14 16
Arrows consumed 1 2
Range with maximum Eye of Amazon 470 px 420 px
Main targeting One hit on one monster Two hits on one monster or one hit on each of two monsters
Main advantage Lower costs and stronger individual hit More stable total damage when both arrows hit one target

Why I prefer Arrow Blow for this leveling build:

  • It costs 2 less MP per cast.
  • It consumes one arrow instead of two.
  • It has 50 px more range at maximum Eye of Amazon.
  • Its larger individual hit can be more effective at reaching a monster’s knockback threshold.

Double Shot is still useful in certain situations. Its two arrows can hit separate monsters, allowing you to finish two weak enemies with one cast if each arrow is enough to defeat its target.

However, splitting damage can also be inconvenient. You might accidentally attract another monster before finishing your current target, especially on small platforms.

At maximum level, Double Shot costs 16 MP for two arrows. If each arrow kills a different monster, that works out to 8 MP per kill, compared with Arrow Blow’s 14 MP per kill. That can be useful when farming weak monsters for drops.

Both attacks are projectiles, so terrain can block them. Double Shot’s second arrow can also end up hitting another monster when you would rather focus on one target.

Recommended SP progression

The goal is to max Arrow Blow, invest in Critical Shot, extend your range with The Eye of Amazon, and finish with Focus and Power Knockback.

Level SP allocation Running skill levels
10 Arrow Blow +1 Arrow Blow 1
11 Arrow Blow +3 Arrow Blow 4
12 Arrow Blow +2, Eye of Amazon +1 Arrow Blow 6, Eye 1
13–14 Arrow Blow +6 Arrow Blow 12, Eye 1
15 Arrow Blow +1, Eye of Amazon +2 Arrow Blow 13, Eye 3
16–17 Arrow Blow +6 Arrow Blow 19, Eye 3
18 Arrow Blow +1, Critical Shot +2 Arrow Blow 20, Critical Shot 2
19–22 Critical Shot +12 Critical Shot 14
23 Critical Shot +1, Eye of Amazon +2 Critical Shot 15, Eye 5
24–26 Eye of Amazon +9 Eye 14
27 Eye of Amazon +1, Focus +2 Eye 15, Focus 2
28–29 Focus +6 Focus 8
30 Focus +2, Power Knockback +1 Focus 10, Power Knockback 1

This is a balanced progression for players who want a useful range increase early without delaying Arrow Blow for too long.

If you’re following an older Bowman build, check the current skill costs and effects before copying its SP order.

Why invest in Eye of Amazon early?

Eye of Amazon increases your attack range, which is particularly valuable for a class built around staying away from monsters.

The early-Eye approach gives up a small amount of immediate damage in exchange for additional range and better damage per MP at certain checkpoints.

Level Early-Eye build Damage-first build Main difference
12 Arrow Blow 6, Eye 1 Arrow Blow 7 Early-Eye has 50 px more range
15 Arrow Blow 13, Eye 3 Arrow Blow 16 Early-Eye has 60 px more range
20 Arrow Blow 20, Critical Shot 8, Eye 3 Arrow Blow 20, Critical Shot 11 Early-Eye keeps a 60 px range advantage
23 Arrow Blow 20, Critical Shot 15, Eye 5 Same skill levels Both approaches reach the same core build

A damage-first build can deal slightly more damage at some early levels, but extra range helps you attack safely and can reduce the number of times monsters get close enough to force a bow whack.

Optional build: More Power Knockback

If your training maps are crowded or you often get surrounded, you may prefer investing more SP into Power Knockback.

One alternative is to take a point in Power Knockback at level 11, then continue building Arrow Blow, Critical Shot, and Eye of Amazon.

At level 30, you can choose between these general priorities:

  • Focus-focused build: More Accuracy and Evasion from Focus.
  • Knockback-focused build: More points in Power Knockback to push enemies away.

Power Knockback reaches three targets at level 8, compared with two targets at level 1. It can be useful when you need more space to keep shooting.

Optional Hunter SP reset

After advancing to Hunter, you may eventually find that Arrow Bomb is more effective than Arrow Blow against the monsters you’re farming.

At that point, you can consider using an SP Reset Scroll to move first-job SP into utility skills. One possible utility-heavy result is:

  • Critical Shot 15
  • The Eye of Amazon 15
  • Focus 20
  • Power Knockback 11

At Power Knockback level 11, the skill deals 155% damage, can hit up to three monsters, and pushes them back 170 px for 9 MP.

Don’t reset immediately just because you can. First, check whether your new second-job skills actually improve your preferred training route. Crossbowmen should also consider Iron Arrow before removing Arrow Blow from their build.

Best Training Maps for Bowman (Levels 10–30)

Bowmen benefit from maps where they can keep their distance and shoot without constantly getting interrupted by monsters. A map with good monster spawns isn’t necessarily the best option if the layout forces you into close combat.

Here are the recommended training locations from levels 15 to 30.

Level Main Training Map Alternative Training notes
15 Dungeon, Southern Forest I Mushroom Garden Slimes, Orange Mushrooms, Red Snails, and Shrooms
20 Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North IV Dungeon, Southern Forest III Green Mushrooms and Slimes
25 Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North IV Dungeon, Southern Forest III Continue training on Green Mushrooms and Slimes
30 Transfer Area Line 1: Area 1 Try Bubblings or Stirges, depending on your build

These are sample recommendations, not guarantees that every character will earn the same EXP. Your weapon, skill levels, Accuracy, and actual combat time will affect your results.

Level 15 training

The Dungeon, Southern Forest I is a good starting option, with Mushroom Garden as an alternative.

At this stage, Arrow Blow is still developing, so focus on monsters you can defeat consistently. The goal is to improve your damage without spending too much on potions and arrows.

Level 20 training

Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North IV and Dungeon, Southern Forest III are useful options.

Green Mushrooms and Slimes are suitable targets for the example build. Because Bowmen rely on ranged attacks, positioning is important. Look for a place where you can shoot without being surrounded.

Level 25 training

You can continue using the same Tree Dungeon and Southern Forest maps if your damage is good enough.

Don’t feel forced to move to a higher-level monster just because you’ve gained a few levels. If your current map gives you consistent kills and fewer interruptions, staying there can be more efficient.

Level 30 training

At level 30, the Transfer Area and Line 1: Area 1 are useful options to consider.

The sample build can defeat Stirges or Bubblings in two Arrow Blows under the assumptions used for the guide. Your actual results will depend on your equipment and damage rolls.

Tips for choosing your training spot

  • Check whether you can hit the monsters consistently before moving there.
  • Keep enough distance to avoid bow whacking.
  • Choose platforms that give you room to shoot.
  • Avoid spending too much time running away from fast monsters.
  • Consider how far you need to travel to buy potions and arrows.
  • Try an alternative map if the popular option is crowded.

The best map for you is the one where you can keep attacking consistently, rather than the one that looks best on paper.

Best Bowman Equipment for Levels 10–30

Your weapon is the most important equipment upgrade for your damage. Fortunately, you don’t need to spend heavily on rare equipment during the early levels.

Recommended weapons

Level Bow Weapon Attack Crossbow Weapon Attack
10 War Bow 30 Crossbow 32
15 Composite Bow 35 Battle Crossbow 37
20 Hunter’s Bow 42 Balanche 39
25 Battle Bow 44 Mountain Crossbow 47
30 Ryden 50 Eagle Crow 52

The level 20 weapons are a notable exception to the general pattern: the Hunter’s Bow has 42 Weapon Attack, while the Balanche has 39. Both have Normal 6 attack speed.

Many early weapons can be bought from Karl in Henesys, while Ryden and Eagle Crow can be crafted through Woodcrafting.

Useful armor and accessories

Level Item Why consider it
10 Green Winter Hat Early headgear
10 Green Archer Top Starter armor
15 Green Feather Hat Headgear upgrade
15 Basic Archer Gloves Early glove option
20 Green Robin Hat Useful headgear
20 Blue Diros Body armor
25 Green Hunter Armor option
25 Blue Savata Useful equipment
30 Green Hawkeye Level 30 headgear
30 Green Marker Can be upgraded with scrolls

Shop equipment is usually sufficient through level 25. I wouldn’t waste all your mesos trying to buy tiny upgrades from other players when a weapon upgrade or a supply of potions would help you more.

Bow or Crossbow: Which Should You Use?

Both weapon types are viable, but they offer slightly different advantages.

Feature Bow Crossbow
Attack speed Generally faster Generally slower
Weapon Attack Often lower Often higher
STR requirements Generally higher Generally lower
Damage per cast Depends on weapon and build Often higher in the level 30 comparison
Damage per MP Depends on weapon and build Often favorable
Best reason to choose it Faster attacks Higher damage per shot and lower STR requirements

For the sample level 30 Arrow Blow build, the comparison looks like this:

Setup Total STR / DEX Weapon Attack and Speed Expected Damage DPS Damage per MP
Ryden + Bronze Arrows 33 STR / 145 DEX 51 W.ATK, Normal 6 425 524 30.3
Eagle Crow + Bronze Arrows 22 STR / 156 DEX 53 W.ATK, Slow 7 446 506 31.9

In this example, the bow produces approximately 3.6% more DPS, while the crossbow delivers about 4.9% more damage per cast and 5.3% more damage per MP.

I’d choose whichever weapon you can obtain and equip without spending too many mesos. If you already have a good bow, there’s no need to switch just because a crossbow has higher Weapon Attack.

Arrows: Costs, Upgrades, and Refills

Arrows are a constant expense for Bowmen, so remember to buy enough before leaving town.

Arrow Type Price Stack Size Bonus
Plain arrows 1 meso each 1,000 No extra Weapon Attack
Bronze arrows 2 mesos each 800 +1 Weapon Attack

Arrow Blow consumes one arrow per cast, while Double Shot consumes two.

You can use plain arrows from level 10 until Bronze Arrows become available through the Henesys citizenship progression. Bronze Arrows unlock through Helpful Stranger at grade 3, which requires level 22 and 3,500 citizenship contribution.

Make sure you carry multiple stacks. Running out of arrows in the middle of a training session can completely interrupt your progression.

Are Attack Gloves Better Than Critical Rate Gloves?

For the sample level 30 Bowman build, Attack scrolls are the better choice.

The comparison uses five successful Lesser glove scrolls on a Green Marker.

Glove Upgrade Result Expected Arrow Blow Damage
Five Gloves Attack Scrolls: Lesser +5 Weapon Attack 466
Five Gloves Critical Rate Scrolls: Lesser +5% Critical Rate 431

Without these upgrades, the sample build deals around 425 expected damage per Arrow Blow.

The Attack setup raises that value to 466, while the Critical Rate setup raises it to 431. That’s approximately 9.8% more damage from the Attack scrolls compared with the original setup, versus about 1.6% from the Critical Rate scrolls.

For this build, I’d prioritize Weapon Attack on gloves. It improves damage more consistently and can help you reach guaranteed-kill breakpoints.

Level 30 Sauna Robes

Unlike some other classes, Bowmen don’t receive a class-specific overall before level 30.

At level 30, both male and female Bowmen can equip a Sauna Robe:

  • Blue Sauna Robe: Male characters.
  • Red Sauna Robe: Female characters.

Both provide +1 to every AP stat and have 10 upgrade slots.

Lesser Overall DEX scrolls provide +1 DEX at 100%, while Intermediate Overall DEX scrolls provide +2 DEX at 60%. Since tops and bottoms don’t have equivalent STR, DEX, INT, or LUK scroll options in the current item data, a scrolled overall can be a useful damage upgrade.

Managing Potions and Mesos

Bowmen have to manage both MP and arrows. Arrow Blow is reasonably MP-efficient, but Focus and Power Knockback also consume MP, and misses still waste the attack cost.

Here are the main consumables worth considering.

Potion Recovery or Bonus Price Best Use
Red Potion 100 HP 50 mesos Affordable HP recovery
Fried Chicken 120 HP 60 mesos Efficient HP recovery
Meat 160 HP 80 mesos Larger HP recovery
Orange 50 MP 50 mesos Affordable MP recovery
Lemon 150 MP 150 mesos Larger MP recovery
Sniper Potion +5 Accuracy for 10 minutes Situational Fix a small Accuracy gap
Supreme Sniper Potion +7 Accuracy for 15 minutes Situational Improve hit rate for longer
Warrior Potion +10 Attack Power for 10 minutes Situational Increase physical damage

Red Potions, Fried Chicken, and Meat all provide 0.5 mesos per HP recovered. Orange potions and Lemons provide 1 meso per MP recovered.

White Potions and Blue Potions offer more recovery per use but are less efficient for their price in this comparison.

My advice is to carry enough HP and MP recovery for your training session, then buy Accuracy potions only when the extra Accuracy helps you hit your targets more reliably.

Common Bowman Mistakes to Avoid

1. Adding STR too early

You don’t need STR for the first-job advancement. Add it when your chosen weapon requires it, and check whether equipment bonuses can cover the requirement.

2. Using bow requirements for a crossbow build

Crossbows generally require less STR. If you’re planning to use one, you may be able to invest more AP into DEX instead.

3. Letting monsters get too close

Bowmen are designed to attack from range. Use platforms and Eye of Amazon to keep enemies at a comfortable distance, and consider Power Knockback if close-range encounters become a problem.

4. Assuming Double Shot always deals more damage

Both attacks reach 240% total damage at maximum level, but Double Shot divides its damage between two arrows. Arrow Blow costs less MP, uses fewer arrows, and has greater range.

5. Forgetting to refill arrows

Always check your inventory before leaving town. Running out of ammunition can leave you unable to use your main ranged attacks.

6. Prioritizing Critical Rate scrolls over Weapon Attack

For the sample level 30 build, Weapon Attack scrolls provide a much larger expected damage increase. Upgrade your gloves accordingly if you can afford the materials.

7. Ignoring positioning

A good training spot should give you enough room to attack without constantly backing away. If monsters keep reaching you, try a different platform or map.

Choosing Your Second Job at Level 30

At level 30, return to Athena Pierce in Henesys to begin the second-job advancement.

The general process is:

  1. Speak to Athena Pierce and receive her letter.
  2. Take the letter to the Bowman Job Instructor at The Road to the Dungeon.
  3. Complete the test by defeating the required monsters and collecting 30 Dark Marbles.
  4. Exchange the marbles for the Proof of a Hero.
  5. Return to Athena Pierce and choose your second job.

You can then choose between Hunter and Crossbowman.

Hunter

Hunter continues the bow playstyle and gains access to skills such as Arrow Bomb, which attacks groups of monsters and can stun them. Bow Mastery improves weapon handling, while Bow Booster increases attack speed.

Choose Hunter if you prefer bows and want to build toward stronger mobbing skills.

Crossbowman

Crossbowman specializes in crossbows. Crossbow Mastery improves damage consistency and Critical Damage, while Iron Arrow provides an attack that pierces through a horizontal line of enemies.

Choose Crossbowman if you prefer heavier shots and want to develop a different style of ranged combat.

Final Thoughts

Bowman is an excellent choice if you prefer ranged combat, high Accuracy, and critical hits. The most important parts of your first 30 levels are building DEX, choosing a suitable weapon, maxing Arrow Blow and Critical Shot, and using Eye of Amazon to maintain your distance from enemies.

For the standard build in this guide, I’d focus on Arrow Blow rather than Double Shot because it uses fewer arrows, costs less MP, and has better range. Make sure you manage your ammunition, upgrade your weapon when it makes sense, and choose training maps where you can attack consistently without being forced into close combat.

Once you reach level 30, choose Hunter if you want to continue with bows and Arrow Bomb, or Crossbowman if you prefer crossbows and Iron Arrow. Both branches build on the ranged strengths that make Bowman enjoyable in the first place.
