Metal Gear Solid 4 Flashback Mania Guide – All Flashbacks, Trophy

The “Flashback Mania” trophy in METAL GEAR SOLID 4: Guns of the Patriots – Master Collection Version requires you to experience the game’s various flashbacks. Some appear as visual prompts during cutscenes, while others are audio flashbacks that trigger when Snake reaches specific locations.

The tricky part is that not every flashback gives you an obvious on-screen prompt. A few audio flashbacks require you to stand in exactly the right place, especially during Act 4 at Shadow Moses.

This guide breaks down the flashbacks by act so you can work through them without missing important triggers.

Metal Gear Solid 4 Flashback Mania Guide – All Flashbacks, Trophy (Master Collection Version)

There are two main types of flashbacks:

  • Visual flashbacks: A button prompt appears in the upper-right corner during certain cutscenes. Press the indicated button when it appears.
  • Audio flashbacks: These are triggered by reaching specific locations or performing particular actions. You generally don’t need to press anything.

For visual flashbacks, don’t be afraid to press the button repeatedly while the prompt is available. This helps make sure the flashback registers.

Some flashbacks are effectively hidden, meaning the normal icon doesn’t appear. The location-based sections below point out where you need to go.

Important Flashback Trophy Tip

If you miss a flashback, you generally need to replay from the beginning using the same save file after finishing the game.

The good news is that the game keeps track of previously triggered flashbacks. So you don’t necessarily have to rediscover every flashback on a later attempt.

For that reason, it’s worth being careful during the sections below rather than assuming you’ll remember them later.

Act 1 Flashbacks

Cemetery

During the cemetery sequence, watch for these flashbacks:

  • Snake salutes at the grave.
  • Snake mentions FOXDIE.
  • Snake mentions Naomi Hunter.
  • Hal mentions Liquid Snake.

Pay attention during the cutscene and activate the flashback prompt whenever it appears.

Middle East

During the Middle East section, you’ll encounter several more flashbacks:

  • Hal, through the MK II, mentions Metal Gear REX.
  • Rookie points a gun at Snake.
  • Snake meets Meryl.
  • Akiba has stomach problems.
  • Snake finds Liquid Ocelot.
  • Naomi helps Snake.

Audio Flashback: Kill 50 Enemies

There is also an important audio flashback in the Middle East.

Requirement: Kill 50 enemies in a single area.

Once you’ve done this, you’ll hear Liquid’s voice and unlock the “You Like to Kill, That’s All” trophy.

A convenient place to attempt this is after obtaining the Can, where you can repeatedly deal with enemies in the same area.

Act 2 Briefing Flashbacks

During the Nomad briefing, watch for these flashbacks:

  • Snake recalls being saved.
  • Hal talks about hearts that have stopped.
  • Naomi’s message about the injection given to Snake.
  • Naomi’s location appears on the Soliton Radar.
  • Hal mentions Mei Ling’s help.

These are all tied to the briefing sequence, so keep an eye out for the visual flashback prompts.

Act 2 Flashbacks

South America

The South America section contains the following flashbacks:

  • Snake recalls Solidus’s fears.
  • Snake sees Vamp.
  • Drebin talks about the Beauty and the Beast unit.
  • Snake recalls Liquid’s FOXHOUND members.
  • Drebin says the Patriots are the glue holding the world together.
  • Naomi and Snake meet again.
  • Snake recalls the virus that killed Anderson, Baker, and Liquid.
  • Snake talks about Drebin’s injection.
  • Snake is on Naomi’s trail.
  • Drebin sees Snake and Naomi with Little Gray.
  • Raiden returns.

Audio Flashback: Crop Circle

There’s also a location-based audio flashback.

Open the map and travel to the crop circle. Once you reach it, stand inside the circle and wait for the audio flashback to trigger.

You don’t need to press a button for this one.

Act 3 Briefing Flashbacks

During the Nomad briefing in Act 3, watch for:

  • Sunny remembers her mother, Olga.
  • Snake talks about Liquid Ocelot’s speech.
  • Snake mentions Europe.
  • Naomi sees Gray Fox in Raiden.
  • Hal talks to Naomi about his sister.

Act 3 Flashbacks

Europe

The Act 3 Europe section contains several flashbacks involving Big Mama:

  • Big Mama finishes off the Dwarf Gekko.
  • Big Mama talks about computers she can use to train.
  • Big Mama gets injured.
  • A promise to Big Mama.
  • Big Mama says she’ll get off her motorcycle when she falls in love, or…

Pay attention to the cutscene prompts during these conversations.

Act 4 Briefing Flashbacks

During the Nomad briefing in Act 4:

  • Snake mentions the Patriots’ AI.
  • Snake asks what the enemy’s plan is.

These are straightforward compared with the location-based flashbacks coming up in Shadow Moses.

Act 4 Shadow Moses Flashbacks

This is the section where you’ll want to slow down.

Shadow Moses contains many of the game’s audio flashbacks, and several require Snake to stand in particular locations.

Some of these audio flashbacks are not required for the “Flashback Mania” trophy, but they’re worth experiencing if you’re trying to see and hear everything.

Before You Start

There are two particularly easy-to-miss flashbacks involving the cameras outside the facility.

The left-camera and right-camera flashbacks only appear when background music is playing.

If you save at the helipad and reload later, the music may no longer play correctly for the trigger. To be safe, save immediately after landing and avoid rushing through the area.

Also, allow the audio to finish completely before moving to the next location.

Shadow Moses: First Area

Work through these triggers:

  • Audio: Stand near the Entrance Elevator from MGS1.
  • Audio: Visit the Hind D location.
  • Audio: Position the camera to recreate the view from MGS1 and wait.
  • Video: Stand underneath the camera on the left inside the room.
  • Video: Stand underneath the camera on the right near the stairs.
  • Audio: Pick up the SOCOM underneath the truck. If you already have it, equip it and aim.
  • Audio: Enter through one of the air ducts.
  • Audio: Approach the tank.

Take your time here. Several of these are triggered simply by being in the correct position.

Shadow Moses: Raven’s Arena and Otacon’s Lab

Continue through the area and trigger:

  • Audio: Stop in Raven’s arena, just before the mines from MGS1.
  • Audio: Walk through the bloodstained corridor toward Otacon’s lab.
  • Video: Snake looks at the locker where Otacon hid.
  • Video: Hal reminds Snake about Naomi’s betrayal.
  • Video: Hal mentions the REX hangar.
  • Video: Snake is almost nostalgic about the magnetic cards.
  • Dual audio: Stand near the locker to hear information about Gray Fox and dialogue between Otacon and Snake.
  • Video: Hal reminisces about Wolf.

The locker area is especially worth checking carefully because multiple flashbacks are associated with it.

Shadow Moses: Wolf’s Battlefield

Continue to these locations:

  • Audio: Stand where Snake fought Wolf in MGS1.
  • Audio: Climb Communication Tower B, the tower closest to the B&B death location.
  • Audio: Stand where Meryl was shot.
  • Audio: Stand in front of the destroyed Hind D on the right side of the area.
  • Audio: Liquid reveals that Naomi is a spy.
  • Audio: Stand near the closed door where Snake defeated Vulcan Raven.
  • Video: Snake and the MK II in the hangar.
  • Video: Hal wonders why it always ends up this way.

For the Vulcan Raven location, look for the area with open floor traps and Dwarf Gekkos/Scarabs. You’ll reach it after crawling through a mandatory passage and turning right.

Shadow Moses: Raiden and Rose Flashbacks

Another sequence features Raiden and Rose.

When the relevant scene begins, watch for these flashbacks:

  • Rose asks Jack if he remembers the day they met.
  • Rose talks about the building King Kong climbed.
  • Jack interrupts and acts like a know-it-all.
  • Jack talks about Godzilla.
  • Rose forgets about the tourists while they are talking.
  • Rose says it was an incredible coincidence that they met again.
  • Jack no longer cares who was right.
  • They watched King Kong several times at Rose’s apartment.

This sequence is another reason not to rush through the Shadow Moses section.

Act 5 Briefing Flashbacks

During the Ship briefing:

  • Hal talks about Naomi’s determination.
  • Hal talks about Naomi’s program, which Sunny finished.
  • Hal says Sunny’s program is better than Emma’s.

Act 5 Flashbacks

Outer Heaven

The final major group of flashbacks occurs during Act 5.

Watch for:

  • Screaming Mantis says Psycho Mantis was another version of himself.
  • Psycho’s ghost asks where your data is.
  • Psycho’s ghost attempts to move your controller.
  • Mantis writhes.
  • Snake watches Mantis disappear.
  • Akiba says he doesn’t have any nanomachines.
  • Meryl asks Akiba about his stomachaches and the nanomachines.
  • Akiba confesses his feelings to Meryl.

Keep watching for the flashback prompt during the appropriate cutscenes.

Ending Flashbacks

The ending also contains several flashback moments:

  • Drebin reveals that he was a child soldier.
  • Big Boss discusses manipulating someone into taking on specific roles.
  • Big Boss remembers the fallen Patriots: Para-Medic, Sigint, Eva, and Ocelot.
  • Big Boss kills Zero.
  • Big Boss talks to Snake about FOXDIE.
  • Big Boss reveals that Snake’s FOXDIE killed Eva and Ocelot.
  • Big Boss talks about his respect for Snake.
  • Big Boss gives a military salute.

Don’t skip through the ending if you’re still working toward the trophy.
