The Orchard Update is one of the biggest additions to Sell Lemons, introducing an entirely new progression system alongside your regular business. Instead of simply focusing on selling lemons, you now have your own orchard where you can plant trees, harvest fruit, unlock powerful mutations, and earn a brand-new currency.
When I first entered the orchard, I expected it to be a small side feature. After spending a little time with it, though, it became clear that it’s much more than that. The orchard has its own upgrades, mechanics, and permanent improvements that can make your progression much faster if you understand how everything works.
Here’s a complete breakdown of the new update.
How to Unlock the Orchard
Once you enter the Orchard area, you’ll find Bob the Alien, who acts as the Orchard Shop NPC.
This is where you’ll:
- Buy orchard-related items.
- Purchase fertilizers.
- Spend your orchard currency.
- Unlock permanent improvements.
Think of Bob’s shop as the central hub for everything related to your orchard.
How the Orchard Works
The orchard is built around a simple gameplay loop:
- Plant a tree.
- Wait for it to grow.
- Apply fertilizers if needed.
- Harvest the fruit.
- Eat or sell the fruit.
- Repeat while expanding your orchard.
As you continue progressing, you’ll unlock additional fruit types and more plots to grow your orchard even further.
Planting Trees
Every plot allows you to plant a fruit tree.
After planting, the tree begins growing automatically.
Once fully grown, you can:
- Harvest the fruit.
- Apply certain fertilizers.
- Gain mutations.
- Sell the harvest for orchard currency.
Expanding your orchard means you’ll eventually manage multiple trees at once, making upgrades increasingly valuable.
What Are Mutations?
Mutations are one of the most important mechanics introduced in the Orchard Update.
Each mutation changes the harvested fruit in some way and generally increases its overall value.
Some fertilizers are specifically designed to add or improve mutations, allowing you to earn better rewards from every harvest.
If you’re aiming for maximum profits, mutations should become one of your biggest priorities.
Eating Orchard Fruits
Harvested fruit isn’t only meant for selling.
You can also eat it to receive temporary bonuses.
Depending on the fruit and its mutations, you may receive effects such as:
- Double Cash
- Faster Growth Speed
- Increased Mutation Chance
These buffs can help speed up both your orchard progression and your regular gameplay, making it worthwhile to save some fruit instead of immediately selling everything.
All Fertilizers
The Orchard Shop offers several different fertilizers, each serving a different purpose.
Mysterious Fertilizer
Adds two mutations to a fully grown tree’s fruit.
This is a great choice if you’re chasing higher-value harvests.
Cleansing Fertilizer
Removes a mutation from a grown tree’s fruit.
Useful if you end up with a mutation you don’t want.
Growth Fertilizer
Reduces 50% of the remaining growth time on a single plot.
If you’re waiting on an important harvest, this is one of the quickest ways to speed things up.
Ascendant Fertilizer
Adds one guaranteed positive mutation to a grown tree.
This is a safer option than relying entirely on random mutation chances.
Permanent Orchard Upgrades
Besides fertilizers, several permanent upgrades can make your orchard much more efficient over time.
Irrigation Kit
Permanently doubles the growth speed of every tree planted on a chosen plot.
Once purchased, that plot continues benefiting forever.
Soil Enricher
Another permanent upgrade that doubles growth speed on a selected plot.
Faster growth means more harvests and more currency over time.
Enriched Uranium
Adds two mutations to every tree grown on a selected plot.
If you’re focusing on valuable fruit, this is one of the strongest long-term upgrades available.
Lucky Clovers
Permanently increases the chance of receiving rare mutations on a plot.
Rare mutations generally lead to more valuable fruit, making this upgrade an excellent investment later in the game.
Expanding Your Orchard
As you continue progressing through the update, you’ll unlock additional planting areas and new fruit varieties.
Expanding your orchard lets you:
- Grow more trees simultaneously.
- Harvest more often.
- Earn orchard currency faster.
- Take better advantage of permanent upgrades.
The larger your orchard becomes, the more valuable growth-speed upgrades become as well.
Cosmetic Repairs
You’ll also notice several objects scattered around the orchard that can be repaired or upgraded.
These improvements are primarily cosmetic and help personalize your orchard rather than increasing production.
They’re a fun way to make your farm look better once you’ve already invested in the upgrades that improve efficiency.
Should You Eat or Sell Your Fruit?
This depends on what you’re trying to accomplish.
If you’re trying to unlock more orchard upgrades quickly, selling your fruit is usually the better option since it provides the currency needed for new purchases.
On the other hand, eating fruit can grant powerful temporary boosts like increased cash earnings, faster growth, or better mutation chances. Those bonuses can help you progress more efficiently, especially during longer farming sessions.
A good strategy is to use fruits with useful buffs while selling the rest to keep your orchard expanding.
The Orchard Update adds a surprisingly deep progression system to Sell Lemons. Instead of simply managing your normal business, you now have a dedicated farming area with its own economy, mutations, fertilizers, permanent upgrades, and collectible fruit buffs.
While it feels separate from your main base, the temporary boosts from harvested fruit can still benefit your overall progression, making the orchard well worth investing time into. The sooner you unlock permanent upgrades like Irrigation Kit, Soil Enricher, and Lucky Clovers, the faster your orchard will grow—and the more rewarding each harvest becomes.
