Knowledge is worth upgrading even if you aren’t completely focused on ranged combat. Higher ranks improve ranged weapons and projectiles, while also expanding Item Research with Koo, giving you access to additional items you can bring into battle.
The problem is that Memory Chips are scattered across several zones and the game doesn’t give you much direction when you first start finding them.

Beast of Reincarnation Memory Chip Locations – How to Increase Knowledge
Memory Chips are the green skull-shaped collectibles you’ll occasionally find while exploring the open world.
When you bring them back to the Cleanse Walker, they’re automatically used to increase its Knowledge rank.
You don’t need to open your inventory and manually consume them. Simply collect the Memory Chips you find and return to the Cleanse Walker.
Knowledge affects two important parts of your progression: ranged equipment upgrades and Koo’s Item Research.
As you increase Knowledge, you’ll gain access to ranged weapon and projectile improvements that include:
- Increased damage
- Quiver expansions
- Faster bow draw time
- Additional ranged and projectile upgrades
Higher Knowledge also allows you to perform additional Item Research with Koo, unlocking new items that can be taken into battle.
Because of that, Memory Chips shouldn’t be treated as optional collectibles. They directly contribute to permanent improvements aboard the Cleanse Walker.
How Many Memory Chips Do You Need?
You’ll need to collect 30 Memory Chips to completely upgrade the Cleanse Walker’s Knowledge stat to Rank 7.
Thankfully, you don’t have to find every single Memory Chip available in the game.
There are more Memory Chips scattered around the world than the 30 required to reach maximum Knowledge. This gives you some flexibility if you miss one while exploring or don’t want to go back for a particularly inconvenient location.
And finding extras isn’t completely pointless either.
Once you’ve reached Knowledge Rank 7, additional Memory Chips you collect will be converted into Amber.
So it’s still worth grabbing a green skull whenever you happen to come across one.
Where to Find Memory Chips
Memory Chips are primarily found while exploring the game’s open-world zones.
Your first place to look should be Strongboxes. These containers can hold the green skulls needed for Knowledge upgrades, so make sure you’re checking them rather than rushing directly toward the next objective.
Memory Chips can also occasionally be obtained from Rusted Golems in the overworld.
You won’t always receive the exact same number from each location. Depending on where you find them, you can typically collect around one to four Memory Chips at a time.
That means a single Strongbox can sometimes provide a decent chunk of progress toward your next Knowledge rank.

Memory Chip locations are spread across the game’s progression areas, so you’ll continue finding them as you move deeper into Beast of Reincarnation.

So if you’ve been searching Mount Hiei for green skulls and can’t find any, you haven’t overlooked some hidden Strongbox. There simply aren’t any Memory Chips to collect in that zone.

Ogouchi Buffer Zone Memory Chip Locations
The Ogouchi Buffer Zone contains Memory Chips that you can collect while progressing through and exploring the area.
Keep an eye out for Strongboxes, as these are one of your main sources of green skulls. It’s worth checking optional paths and areas away from the direct objective route rather than simply moving straight through the zone.
Any Memory Chips collected here will automatically contribute toward your Knowledge rank the next time you return to the Cleanse Walker.
Ancient Civilization Zone Memory Chip Locations
You can find additional Memory Chips in the Ancient Civilization Zone.
As with the previous area, thoroughly searching for Strongboxes is the easiest way to avoid missing upgrade resources.
Rusted Golems are another potential source, so they’re worth checking while you’re exploring instead of avoiding every optional encounter.
The Great Wall Terraces Memory Chip Locations
The Great Wall Terraces contains another set of Memory Chips for increasing your Knowledge rank.
At this point, it’s worth getting into the habit of checking every Strongbox you encounter. Even if you’re already comfortable with your current ranged setup, you’ll eventually want higher Knowledge for the additional upgrades and Item Research it unlocks.
If you miss a green skull here, don’t worry too much. You only need 30 Memory Chips overall, and there are more available throughout the game than are required to reach Rank 7.
Pilgrim’s Zone Memory Chip Locations
There are more Memory Chips to collect throughout Pilgrim’s Zone.
Search the area carefully for Strongboxes and check any Rusted Golems you encounter for potential skull resources.
If you’ve collected several Memory Chips since your previous visit to the Cleanse Walker, consider returning through a Campfire. Your collected chips will be deposited automatically, and you may immediately unlock another Knowledge rank.
Matsukawa Zone Memory Chip Locations
The Matsukawa Zone also contains Memory Chips.
By this point in your journey, Knowledge upgrades can start becoming much more noticeable, particularly if you’re regularly using ranged weapons or projectiles.
Even melee-focused players should continue collecting them, however, since Knowledge also affects the Item Research available through Koo.
Fuji Frontier Zone Memory Chip Locations
Continue looking for green skulls as you reach the Fuji Frontier Zone.
Memory Chips here work exactly like those you’ve collected previously: pick them up, return to the Cleanse Walker, and they’ll automatically be added toward your Knowledge progression.
There’s no need to keep them for a later upgrade or manually activate them.
Giant Tree Zone Memory Chip Locations
The Giant Tree Zone has more Memory Chips available for players working toward maximum Knowledge.
Check Strongboxes carefully while exploring and don’t assume every skull-shaped resource serves the same purpose.
Remember the color system:
Green skull = Memory Chip = Knowledge.
If you’re specifically trying to reach Knowledge Rank 7, green skulls are the ones you’re hunting.
Crater Zone Memory Chip Locations
More Memory Chips can be found throughout the Crater Zone.
Depending on how thoroughly you’ve explored previous areas, you may already be getting fairly close to the 30 Memory Chips needed for maximum Knowledge by this stage.
You still don’t need to stop collecting them after reaching the cap, though. Extra Memory Chips are converted into Amber once Knowledge has reached Rank 7.
Inukami River Zone Memory Chip Locations
The Inukami River Zone contains additional Memory Chips.
Search Strongboxes and keep an eye on Rusted Golems as you make your way through the area.
If you’ve missed some Memory Chips in earlier zones, locations such as Inukami River give you another opportunity to make up the difference without necessarily backtracking for every individual green skull.
Starfall Tower Memory Chip Locations
You can continue collecting Memory Chips in Starfall Tower.
Players who have been thoroughly searching previous areas may already have Knowledge at or near its maximum rank, but these locations are still worth checking.
If Knowledge is already Rank 7, the additional Memory Chips will simply become Amber instead.
Are There Memory Chips in Mount Hiei?
No.
There are no Memory Chips to find in Mount Hiei.
This is one area where you can stop searching for green skulls entirely. If you’re missing Memory Chips for Rank 7, you’ll need to collect them from one of the other zones instead.
This is especially useful to know if you’re following the zones in order and wondering why you haven’t encountered any Memory Chips after reaching Mount Hiei.
The Capital Memory Chip Locations
The Capital is another location where Memory Chips can be found.
If you haven’t reached the required 30 Memory Chips by this point, continue checking Strongboxes and other potential skull locations while exploring the area.
Remember that you only need 30 total for Knowledge Rank 7. You don’t have to clear every Memory Chip location across all zones to finish the upgrade.
What Happens After You Collect a Memory Chip?
You don’t have to do anything special.
Once you’ve collected a Memory Chip, continue exploring normally until you’re ready to return to the Cleanse Walker.
When you return, your collected Memory Chips are automatically invested into Knowledge.
There’s no separate NPC you need to hand them to and no upgrade item you need to craft first.
