You can check this yourself by opening the Information section and then going to the Bestiary. Ancient Bones should appear in the list of creatures there.
If you have not fought one before, this is a good way to confirm exactly what you are looking for.
Where Does Ancient Bones Spawn?
Ancient Bones spawns randomly inside the Veil.
It is considered somewhat rare, but you should not think of it as an impossible creature to find. You may need to spend some time searching, but it can spawn naturally while you are exploring the area.
The best method is to wait until nighttime and then head into the Veil.
Go Deep Into the Veil at Night
From my experience, you should not just stay near the entrance of the Veil.
Instead, go deeper into the area and explore the deeper sections while it is nighttime. This is where you should focus your search for Ancient Bones.
The method is simple:
- Wait until night.
- Head into the Veil.
- Travel toward the deeper parts of the area.
- Look around for Ancient Bones to spawn.
At least one Ancient Bones should appear during the night, so keep exploring and checking the area.
Ancient Bones Spawn Is Random
The Ancient Bones spawn is random, so you may not immediately find one the moment you enter the Veil.
However, you should keep searching rather than leaving too quickly. In the example shown, Ancient Bones was found after only around five minutes of searching.
Your experience may vary depending on the spawn, but the important thing is to stay in the Veil and search the deeper areas during the night.
Bring Sanity Potions Before Fighting Ancient Bones
Before heading deep into the Veil, I recommend bringing some Sanity Potions.
You may not always need them, but they are useful to have just in case. Since you will be spending time exploring the deeper parts of the Veil, being prepared can save you from having to leave early.
So before you start your search, make sure you have a few Sanity Potions ready.
How to Defeat Ancient Bones
Once you finally find Ancient Bones, you simply need to defeat it to complete the quest.
The fight may take some time depending on your equipment and character progression. You may also need to play carefully and use your surroundings to your advantage.
Ancient Bones can be difficult if you are not prepared, but once you successfully defeat it, the main quest objective should be completed.
After killing Ancient Bones, you should see the Main Quest Completed message.

You do not need to find a hidden NPC or complete a special puzzle. Ancient Bones randomly spawns in the Veil, and your best strategy is to wait for nighttime and search the deeper parts of the area.
Make sure you bring Sanity Potions, spend some time exploring, and keep looking for the creature. Once Ancient Bones appears, defeat it and your Slay an Ancient Bone main quest should finally be complete.
