Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic – the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil brings something new to the classic Touhou experience: Steam achievements. While many of the achievements clearly explain what you need to do, a few of them can be confusing, especially when you start working toward a full 100% completion.
In this post, we’ll go through every achievement and explain exactly what you need to do to unlock it. From clearing every stage and seeing all endings to completing different difficulties, surviving special challenge runs, and facing Extra Phantom Flandre, there is quite a lot to complete.
Getting 100% is not going to be easy. This is still a Touhou game, after all, so you’ll need to improve at dodging danmaku and eventually complete some difficult runs. The good news is that Challenge Mode makes many achievements much easier, so you can focus your serious attempts on the achievements that actually require strong gameplay.
Touhou Koumakyou New Classic 100% Achievement Guide
Before jumping into individual achievements, it’s useful to understand the biggest challenges you’ll face.
To unlock everything, you will eventually need to:
- Complete a 1CC run on Normal difficulty or higher.
- Clear the game with every character and shot type.
- Complete a run without dying.
- Finish the Extra Stage.
- Reach and complete Extra Phantom Flandre.
- Encounter all 134 Spell Cards.
A 1CC means completing the game without using a continue.
You don’t necessarily need to complete every achievement through difficult Standard Mode runs. The new Challenge Mode gives you infinite lives and can make many of the requirements much easier.
However, some achievements cannot be cheesed this way.
The no-death achievement, for example, is not available in Challenge Mode, and reaching Extra Phantom Flandre requires you to actually perform well during the Extra Stage.
Finishing Every Stage
Several achievements are unlocked simply by completing stages and defeating their bosses.
The good news is that these can all be completed in Challenge Mode, making them much easier.
The first five stages are available on every difficulty. However, Stage 6 is only available on Normal difficulty or higher.
You will also need to unlock and complete the Extra Stage.
Is That All There Is to Darkness?
Requirement: Exorcise Rumia.
Simply finish Stage 1 and defeat Rumia.
This is one of the first achievements you’ll unlock naturally.
She’s Got Energy If Nothing Else
Requirement: Exorcise Cirno.
Finish Stage 2 and defeat Cirno.
Guards Are Meant to Be Defeated
Requirement: Exorcise Hong Meiling.
Finish Stage 3 and defeat Hong Meiling.
The Very Angry Bookworm
Requirement: Exorcise Patchouli Knowledge.
Finish Stage 4 and defeat Patchouli.
I Have No Idea What Just Happened
Requirement: Exorcise Sakuya Izayoi.
Finish Stage 5 and defeat Sakuya.
Victory! The Incident Is Resolved!
Requirement: Exorcise Remilia Scarlet.
Finish Stage 6 and defeat Remilia.
Remember that Stage 6 is not available on Easy difficulty, so you’ll need to play on Normal or higher.
Nothing to Be Afraid of Anymore!
Requirement: Exorcise Flandre Scarlet.
Complete the Extra Stage and defeat Flandre.
The Extra Stage needs to be unlocked first, which makes this one slightly more demanding than the regular stage achievements.
How to Unlock the Extra Stage
To unlock the Extra Stage normally, you need to complete a 1CC on at least Normal difficulty.
That means finishing the game without using a continue.
Once unlocked, the Extra Stage becomes one of the important parts of your journey toward 100% completion because you’ll need it for multiple achievements and for completing your Spell Card Record.
All Endings Explained
There are six different endings in the game, but you only need to obtain five of them for the achievement requirements.
You’ll need:
- One Bad Ending
- All four Good Endings
The ending you receive depends on your difficulty, whether you used continues, and which character and amulet you selected.
How to Get a Bad Ending
You can get a Bad Ending in two ways.
The easiest method is to:
- Complete the game on Easy difficulty.
You can also get one by:
- Completing the game on any difficulty after using at least one continue.
The Bad Ending depends on your character.
Playing as Reimu gives you one Bad Ending, while playing as Marisa gives you the other.
Next Time For Sure…
Requirement: Get either Bad Ending.
The easiest option is simply clearing Easy difficulty.
You don’t need to collect both Bad Endings for the achievement.
How to Get All Good Endings
Getting a Good Ending is much harder.
You need to:
- Play on Normal difficulty or higher.
- Complete the game without using any continues.
- Finish the entire run successfully.
In other words, you need a proper 1CC.
There are four Good Endings because the game has four character and shot-type combinations.
You’ll need to complete a Normal or higher 1CC with:
- ReimuA — Spirit Amulet
- ReimuB — Dream Amulet
- MarisaA — Magic Amulet
- MarisaB — Love Amulet
I Brought My Parasol
Requirement: Get Ending 3.
Clear Normal or higher without using continues while playing as Spirit Amulet Reimu.
What’s the Story?
Requirement: Get Ending 4.
Clear Normal or higher without using continues while playing as Dream Amulet Reimu.
What’s on the Menu Today?
Requirement: Get Ending 5.
Clear Normal or higher without using continues while playing as Magic Amulet Marisa.
No Dead Rats Here
Requirement: Get Ending 6.
Clear Normal or higher without using continues while playing as Love Amulet Marisa.
Difficulty Clear Achievements
There are achievements for clearing the game on every difficulty:
- Easy
- Normal
- Hard
- Lunatic
One important thing to remember is that clearing a higher difficulty does not automatically unlock the achievement for lower difficulties.
For example, clearing Lunatic does not give you the Hard, Normal, and Easy achievements.
You’ll need to complete a run on each difficulty separately.
The good news is that these achievements can be completed in Challenge Mode, where you have infinite lives.
You are also allowed to use continues in Standard Mode.
Impressive, You Show Promise
Requirement: Clear the game on Easy.
Easy only includes the first five stages.
Continues are allowed.
You’re a Sharp Shooter!
Requirement: Clear the game on Normal.
Continues are allowed.
Are You Maybe an Arcade Veteran?
Requirement: Clear the game on Hard.
Continues are allowed.
The Scarlet Moon Is Yours!
Requirement: Clear the game on Lunatic.
Continues are allowed.
If you’re only trying to unlock the achievements, Challenge Mode is the easiest way to get through these difficulty clears.
Extra Phantom Flandre Explained
This is one of the hardest requirements for 100% completion.
It’s also required for another major achievement later: The Very Model of a Danmaku Collector!
There Are No Continues in Life
Requirement: Give it everything you’ve got!
This achievement is tied to the Extra Phantom Flandre section.
Extra Phantom is an exclusive feature of the New Classic version and was not part of the original Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.
During the Extra Stage, Flandre can enter an additional Phantom phase under specific conditions.
How to Reach Extra Phantom Flandre
You need to play through the Extra Stage and capture enough of Flandre’s Spell Cards.
A Spell Card capture means completing the Spell Card without:
- Getting hit.
- Using a bomb.
- Letting the timer run out.
According to the guide, you need to capture at least 7 Spell Cards, although the exact requirement may possibly be 6.
If you’ve captured enough Spell Cards and finish the Extra Stage, the Extra Phantom phase will trigger.
What Happens During Extra Phantom?
Extra Phantom Flandre has three additional Spell Cards.
You need to successfully survive all three of them to unlock the achievement.
The important thing is that you do not need to capture these three Spell Cards.
You simply need to pass them.
This is still one of the most difficult parts of the entire achievement list, so expect to spend some time practicing the Extra Stage.
Special Condition Achievements
A few achievements require you to complete runs under specific conditions.
Don’t Worry, There Are Plenty of Replacements
Requirement: Clear all stages in Challenge Mode.
Simply select Challenge Mode, choose a difficulty, and complete a full run.
Challenge Mode gives you infinite lives, making this one very straightforward.
Nothing Could Replace You
Requirement: Clear all stages with no deaths.
This achievement cannot be completed in Challenge Mode.
The easiest difficulty for this challenge is Easy, since you only have to complete the first five stages.
Bombs are allowed.
This is important because you should absolutely use bombs to protect a no-death run.
If you know a difficult attack is coming and you’re not confident you can dodge it, bombing is much better than risking the entire attempt.
Welcome to Gensoukyou
Requirement: Set out to resolve the incident for the first time.
This is probably the easiest achievement in the game.
Simply start a run on any difficulty and mode.
Please Tell Us Your Name
Requirement: Leave your name in the records for the first time.
After dying or completing a run, you’ll eventually have the opportunity to enter a name for the score records.
Enter your name and the achievement should unlock.
How to Deathbomb
8 Frames of Satisfaction
Requirement: Successfully Deathbomb for the first time.
Deathbombing is one of the classic mechanics you’ll want to understand while playing Touhou.
When you get hit, you have a very short amount of time to use a bomb.
If you successfully bomb within that window, the hit is cancelled and you lose a bomb instead of losing a life.
The timing is extremely short:
8 frames, or roughly 0.13 seconds.
You generally can’t react after realizing you’ve already been hit.
Instead, you need to anticipate danger.
If you’re about to enter a difficult bullet pattern, be ready to press the bomb button immediately. Over time, deathbombing can become something you naturally attempt during dangerous situations.
Unlocking Music Room Tracks
Let’s Just Check Out the Music Instead
Requirement: Unlock 7 or more tracks in the Music Room.
Music tracks unlock naturally as you hear them during gameplay.
You should be able to unlock seven tracks after only a few runs.
Reaching around Stage 4 and hearing the boss music should usually be enough.
Once you’ve heard at least seven tracks:
- Return to the main menu.
- Select Music Room.
The achievement should unlock.
The Very Model of a Danmaku Collector!
Requirement: Reveal all Spell Cards in the Spell Card Record.
This is one of the two hardest achievements in the game.
To unlock it, you need to encounter all 134 unique Spell Cards.
The good news is that you do not need to capture every Spell Card.
You simply need to encounter them.
Most of this can be done in Challenge Mode, but Extra Phantom Flandre is the major exception.
Difficulty Requirements for All Spell Cards
To see every Spell Card, you’ll need to play through multiple difficulties.
You need to reach:
- The end of Stage 5 or later on Easy.
- Remilia’s final Spell Card on Normal.
- Remilia’s final Spell Card on Hard.
- Remilia’s final Spell Card on Lunatic.
- Flandre’s final Spell Card in the Extra Stage.
- The Extra Phantom phase and its bonus Spell Cards.
You don’t necessarily need to finish every single run.
For Spell Card collection purposes, reaching the relevant boss and seeing the required Spell Cards is enough.
Patchouli Makes This Achievement Much Longer
There is one major complication.
Patchouli Knowledge’s Spell Cards change depending on your selected character and amulet.
That means simply playing through every difficulty once is not enough.
You need to use all four character and shot-type combinations:
- ReimuA
- ReimuB
- MarisaA
- MarisaB
And you need to do this on every difficulty:
- Easy
- Normal
- Hard
- Lunatic
That means you’ll need a total of 16 runs where you reach at least the end of Stage 4 or Patchouli’s final Spell Card.
This is the part that makes the Spell Card achievement such a long grind.
How to Check Your Spell Card Progress
You can check your progress from the main menu.
Go to:
Score → Spell Card Records
This allows you to see which Spell Cards you’ve encountered.
One thing to remember is that Spell Cards 132, 133, and 134 won’t appear normally before you encounter them during the Extra Phantom phase.
Even if they aren’t visible as unknown entries yet, they are still required for the achievement.
Getting 100% achievements in Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic is a serious challenge, especially if you’re new to Touhou or bullet hell games.
Fortunately, Challenge Mode makes a large portion of the achievement list much more manageable. You can use it to clear stages, complete difficulties, and collect many Spell Cards without worrying about running out of lives.
The real tests begin when you start working on 1CC clears, the no-death run, and Extra Phantom Flandre.
My advice is to take your time and don’t try to force everything in one session. Learn the stages, practice the bosses, understand your chosen shot type, and slowly build up your consistency.
Eventually, you’ll go from barely surviving the early stages to recognizing patterns, anticipating dangerous attacks, and pushing through some of the hardest danmaku challenges in the game.
And once you finally complete that Spell Card Record and finish Extra Phantom Flandre, you’ll have truly earned that 100% completion.
