How to Get Frieren and Blood Demon in A Universal Time

A Universal Time (AUT) has received a major update, bringing two new specs to the game: The Last Great Mage (Frieren) and Blood Demon. Both abilities have their own unlock requirements, and if you want to obtain them, you will need to collect specific items, complete quests, and defeat powerful enemies.

In this guide, we will explain how to unlock both new specs step by step. Blood Demon is the more straightforward one to obtain, while Frieren requires you to complete a longer questline and defeat a challenging boss.

We will also cover where to find Grimoires, how to get Greater Demon Horns, how to craft the Magical Vessel, and what Blood Demon can do once you unlock it.

How to Get Frieren and Blood Demon in A Universal Time (Update 6.3)

Blood Demon is an Epic ability that you can unlock by crafting a Bloody Tome and using it on Standless.

Step 1: Get a Grimoire

First, you need to obtain a Grimoire. These can be found through Antique Chests, which have a chance to spawn as Mimics.

Antique Chests can spawn at the following locations:

  • Dragon’s Cavern
  • In front of Dragon’s Cavern
  • Prison
  • Near West Park

Look for Antique Chests and open them. Some will turn out to be Mimics, which you can fight for loot. According to the gameplay shown, regular Antique Chests can also contain Grimoires, so you do not need to fight only Mimics.

If you encounter a Mimic, completing its QTE successfully can instantly defeat it.

Step 2: Get a Greater Demon Horn

Next, you need a Greater Demon Horn. This item drops from the Deceiver, a powerful demon boss.

To summon the Deceiver, start the Deceiver Slayer Quest by talking to Hecate. Follow the quest instructions and defeat the required demons until the Deceiver appears.

The boss can deal significant damage, so be prepared for a fight. You may need to defeat it more than once to obtain the Greater Demon Horns required for both specs.

Step 3: Craft the Bloody Tome

Once you have the required materials, visit the crafting NPC and craft the Bloody Tome using:

  • 1 Grimoire
  • 1 Greater Demon Horn

Step 4: Use the Bloody Tome

Equip Standless, use the Bloody Tome on it, and you will unlock Blood Demon.

How to Get Frieren in AUT

Frieren, also known as The Last Great Mage, takes more work to unlock. You must complete the Elven Mage’s questline, collect Grimoires, defeat the Deceiver, craft a Magical Vessel, and defeat Frieren’s Doppelganger.

Step 1: Talk to the Elven Mage

Find the Elven Mage NPC and start her quest. She will ask whether you have seen any Grimoires and then tell you to collect three Grimoires.

You can obtain them from Antique Chests around the map. Check the locations listed earlier and defeat any Mimics you encounter.

Collect three Grimoires and return to the Elven Mage to continue the quest.

Step 2: Complete the Deceiver Slayer Quest

After you return the Grimoires, the Elven Mage will tell you about a dangerous fiend in the area. You must defeat the Deceiver.

Talk to Hecate and accept the Deceiver Slayer Quest. Follow the quest objectives and defeat the required demons until you can summon the Deceiver.

Defeat the boss to progress Frieren’s questline. You may also obtain a Greater Demon Horn during this fight, which is useful for crafting Blood Demon’s Bloody Tome.

Step 3: Craft a Magical Vessel

After defeating the Deceiver, return to the Elven Mage. She will ask you to obtain an Ancient Grimoire and craft a Magical Vessel.

The gameplay shown in the video uses Metal Ingots and Coal to craft the Magical Vessel. Metal Scraps and Coal can be obtained through loot, and Coal Loot can be used directly to obtain Coal.

Once you have the required materials, visit the crafting NPC and craft the Magical Vessel.

Step 4: Get the Enchanted Magical Vessel

Take the Magical Vessel back to the Elven Mage. She will enchant it, turning it into an Enchanted Magical Vessel.

You will need this item to summon the boss required for Frieren’s unlock.

Step 5: Summon and Defeat Frieren’s Doppelganger

Travel to the boss altar at Knight’s Cavern and use the Enchanted Magical Vessel to summon Frieren’s Doppelganger.

This is a challenging boss fight. The Doppelganger has multiple phases and can deal heavy damage, so avoid attacks carefully and be ready to dodge its ranged moves.

Observation Haki can be helpful during the fight, as shown in the gameplay. Do not underestimate the second phase, even if you manage to reduce the boss’s health quickly at the beginning.

If you lose, you may need to craft another Magical Vessel and have it enchanted again before attempting the fight.

Step 6: Collect the Ancient Grimoire

After defeating Frieren’s Doppelganger, collect the Ancient Grimoire it drops.

Return to the Elven Mage and hand over the item. She will reward you with the Mage’s Staff.

Step 7: Unlock The Last Great Mage

Equip Standless and use the Mage’s Staff on it.

You will unlock The Last Great Mage (Frieren), completing the main obtainment quest.

How to Unlock Frieren’s Mastery

Getting Frieren is only the beginning if you want to unlock her additional progression.

According to the update information shown in the video, you must defeat the Mirror Demon while using The Last Great Mage to unlock the Slayer Awakening.

Blood Demon Moveset and Passive

Blood Demon has a unique mechanic that makes its attacks cost health. Its passive helps offset this cost by marking enemies and allowing you to recover health when attacking marked targets.

Blood Demon Passive

Your moves apply a mark to enemies. Attacking a marked enemy deals additional damage based on the mark’s stacks and heals you based on those stacks.

However, missing moves or using certain attacks can cost health. If you attack normally without taking advantage of marked enemies, you will continue to lose health.

This means you should focus on applying marks and attacking marked targets to help manage Blood Demon’s health costs.

Blood Grasp

Blood Grasp is a grab-style attack that can be used to catch opponents and deal damage.

Blood Ledger

Blood Ledger acts as a special mode. While it is active, health costs from your moves are stored in a buffer instead of being applied immediately.

The move also reduces cooldowns. Once the effect ends, the accumulated health cost is applied, so be careful about how many abilities you use during the mode.

Hemal Barrage

Hemal Barrage launches a barrage of blood-based attacks at your opponent.

Blood Cleaver

Blood Cleaver is a spinning attack followed by a piercing strike, allowing you to pressure enemies at close range.

Bury

Bury launches three blood spears toward the opponent. The move can automatically track the target you are aiming at, making it useful for landing ranged attacks.

Blood Needles

Blood Needles throws blood-based projectiles at the enemy and inflicts bleeding.

Crimson Sink

Crimson Sink pulls enemies toward the center of its effect and deals continuous damage, making it useful for keeping opponents grouped together.

Tips for Getting Both Specs Faster

  • Farm Antique Chests efficiently: Check Dragon’s Cavern, Prison, and West Park for chest spawns.
  • Complete the QTE against Mimics: Successfully completing the QTE can instantly defeat them.
  • Save extra Grimoires: You need three for Frieren’s questline and another for the Bloody Tome.
  • Farm the Deceiver with both goals in mind: Greater Demon Horns are needed for Blood Demon, and defeating the boss also progresses Frieren’s quest.
  • Keep spare crafting materials: You may need another Magical Vessel if you lose against Frieren’s Doppelganger.
  • Use Observation Haki against the boss: It can help you avoid dangerous attacks during the fight.

Both new specs offer different experiences in A Universal Time. Blood Demon is quicker to unlock once you have a Grimoire and a Greater Demon Horn, while Frieren requires a longer questline and a difficult boss fight.

If you want to unlock both, it makes sense to collect extra Grimoires and farm the Deceiver while progressing Frieren’s quest. That way, you can work toward both specs without repeating more farming than necessary.
