Spooky Steve is one of the most frustrating enemies in Megabonk. He can instantly kill you, ignores most mistakes, and forces you to build specifically around countering him. This guide explains a proven setup and strategy that lets you kill Spooky Steve consistently and unlock Roberto without having to experiment blindly.
How to Kill Spooky Steve and Unlock Roberto in Megabonk
Spooky Steve
Spooky Steve is designed as a build-check boss. He punishes low crowd control, poor cooldown management, and weak scaling. Most normal damage-focused builds fail because Steve closes distance too quickly and one-shots you.
The goal is not raw damage, but lockdown and proc frequency.
Recommended Characters
You can defeat Spooky Steve with multiple characters, but these are the most reliable options:
Athena
Athena has no special interaction with Steve, but her strong starting weapon makes the early game much easier. This helps you scale safely before Steve appears.
Bandit
Bandit’s innate cooldown reduction is extremely strong. This allows you to skip the cooldown tome and instead invest into both size and quantity tomes. The downside is that Bandit requires higher levels to fully come online.
Megachad
Megachad is the strongest option if used correctly. His passive can stun Spooky Steve, allowing you to lock him down almost permanently. With enough duration and Frostwalker levels, Steve can be killed even without a perfect item setup.
Weapon Setup
These weapons work together to control Steve and trigger effects rapidly:
- Aegis
- Dexecutioner
- Black Hole
- Frostwalker
Dexecutioner is the main kill condition. The faster it procs, the faster Steve dies. Black Hole and Frostwalker exist to keep Steve locked in place.
Essential Tomes
Your tome choices matter more than raw damage upgrades.
Priority tomes:
- Cooldown (highest priority)
- Quantity
- Duration
- Size (at least one)
If you are playing Bandit, you can skip the cooldown tome and take both size and quantity instead.
Key Items to Look For
These items dramatically increase consistency:
Ice Crystal
This is the single most important item. Ice Crystals give you freeze procs, which keep Steve locked in place. You should aim for at least 10, but 15 or more is ideal.
Overpowered Lamp
Increases proc frequency, which means more freezes and more Dexecutioner activations.
Thunder Mitts / Lightning Orb
Extra hit procs that help trigger freeze and passive effects more often.
Ice Cube
Optional. Can help, but not mandatory.
Mirror
Provides a short invulnerability window. Extremely useful for surviving a mistake.
How the Build Actually Kills Steve
Spooky Steve is killed primarily through Dexecutioner passive procs, not direct weapon damage.
To make this work:
- High cooldown reduction makes Dexecutioner trigger more often
- High quantity increases the number of hit checks
- High size makes Black Holes larger, keeping Steve trapped
- High duration keeps Frostwalker active longer
When Steve is repeatedly frozen and trapped inside Black Holes, Dexecutioner procs rapidly and kills him in around 1–2 minutes.
Leveling Priorities
When leveling up, focus on:
- Cooldown tome
- Quantity tome
- Dexecutioner levels
- Black Hole levels
- Frostwalker levels
- Duration (over 100% is ideal)
Damage upgrades are secondary. Crowd control and proc speed matter more than raw DPS.
You do not need a perfect run to kill Spooky Steve. RNG, playstyle, and comfort level all matter, and it may take a few attempts to get it right.
Cooldown reduction is the most important stat in this fight. Everything else exists to support it.
Once you understand how the lockdown loop works, Spooky Steve becomes consistent instead of impossible, and Roberto is yours.
