The Dagger Duchess is one of the most unique rulers added in Merge Tactics because she introduces something completely new to the game — items. Instead of giving extra elixir, economy boosts, or team size advantages, she provides a reusable dagger that can dramatically change how a single troop performs.
This makes her very different from traditional rulers and requires a slightly different playstyle to use effectively.
How the Dagger Duchess Works
Her main ability is simple:
- She gives you a Dagger item that can be equipped to any troop.
- The dagger has limited durability (it can only trigger a certain number of attacks).
- Once durability runs out, the dagger stops working until you get another one.
What the Dagger Gives
When equipped, the dagger provides:
- +1 attack range
- +150% hit speed
- Multiple rapid attacks until durability runs out
This means the troop holding it temporarily becomes much faster and more dangerous.
However, there is an important trade-off:
The Dagger Duchess does NOT provide extra elixir.
This is her biggest weakness and the main reason many players struggle with her.
Unlocking the Dagger Duchess
You unlock her through the progression system:
- She becomes available at 1600 trophies on the Star Steel Road.
- This makes her harder to obtain compared to earlier rulers.
Best Troops to Use With the Dagger
The dagger is strongest when used on troops that benefit heavily from attack speed.
1. Ranged Damage Dealers (Best Choice)
These units gain the most value because they can safely fire rapid attacks from distance.
Top examples:
- Wizard — splash damage + fast hits melts teams quickly
- Archer — becomes a high-speed carry
- Dark Goblin — turns into a machine-gun attacker
This is generally considered the best way to use the dagger.
2. Splash Damage Units
Units that hit multiple enemies get extra value because each fast attack can damage several targets.
Examples:
- Valkyrie
- Wizard
This can create chain damage and wipe grouped enemies quickly.
3. High DPS Carry Units
The dagger works well when you have one main damage dealer carrying your team.
It’s especially strong when:
- You focus resources into one troop
- You protect it with tanks
This creates a classic “carry comp” strategy.
Units That Do NOT Benefit Much
Some troops don’t gain much from the dagger.
Ability-Based Units
If their abilities depend on time rather than hits, the dagger won’t help much.
Example:
- Witch — her skeleton spawning is time-based, so attack speed doesn’t matter.
Tank Units
Putting the dagger on tanks usually wastes its potential because they aren’t designed to deal heavy damage.
Best Team Strategy With Dagger Duchess
Since she doesn’t provide extra elixir, your strategy should focus on efficiency.
Recommended Playstyle
- Build around one strong carry
- Use cheap supporting units
- Focus on ranged damage dealers
- Avoid expensive late-game troops early
Strong Team Composition Example
One balanced setup includes:
- Knight (frontline tank)
- Valkyrie (splash damage)
- Royal Giant (tank support)
- Four Marksman units (main DPS)
Why this works:
- Tanks protect your ranged troops
- Marksman units benefit heavily from the dagger
- The composition stays affordable despite low elixir income
Auto-Equip Mechanic
If you forget to equip the dagger manually:
- It automatically goes to your strongest troop
- Priority is based on star level and damage
This makes it forgiving for newer players.
