If you are just starting Alabaster Dawn or coming back after taking a long break, the game can honestly feel a little confusing at first because there are a lot of mechanics that are not fully explained immediately. This Alabaster Dawn Beginner Guide breaks down the important basics including movement, combat, cooking, status effects, controls, and some frequently asked questions that will help you understand how everything works much faster.
Keep in mind that the game is still in Early Access, so mechanics and systems may change over time.

Movement Basics
Movement is extremely important in Alabaster Dawn because combat becomes much smoother once you learn how movement mechanics actually work.
Jumping
You can perform a long jump by pressing the dash button right before reaching a ledge.
While jumping, aiming slows down time slightly which helps a lot with precise ranged attacks.
If you keep holding the dash button, Juno automatically jumps off ledges without stopping.
Dash & Dodge
Press the dash button while moving to perform a quick directional dash.
If you press it while standing still, Juno instead performs a backstep.
Both actions consume stamina, but they also provide a brief invulnerability window at the start of the movement.
That invulnerability timing becomes really useful during harder fights.
Sprinting
After dashing, continue holding the dash button to charge a sprint.
Once released, Juno begins sprinting automatically and jumps across ledges without interruption.
Sprint cancels if:
- You attack
- You interact with objects
- You get hit by enemies
Divine Sprint
If you hold the dash button longer, a blue light appears beneath Juno.
Releasing while moving activates Divine Sprint, which is an even faster version of sprinting.
It also automatically jumps gaps and feels much smoother for traveling longer distances.
Healing & Boosts
Press the heal or boost buttons to consume healing bulbs or cooking boosts.
Juno will not waste healing bulbs if already at full health, which is honestly a really nice quality-of-life feature.
Combat Basics
Combat in Alabaster Dawn is fast and flexible once you understand the mechanics properly.
Melee Combos
Press the melee attack button three times to perform the standard combo chain.
The final attack:
- Hits twice
- Acts as a finisher
- Can hit multiple enemies
Different weapons also have completely different attack patterns and combo behaviors.
Ranged Combat
While aiming, releasing the fire button shoots your ranged weapon.
You can actually fire very quickly without fully leaving aim mode if timed properly.
Some weapons later unlock quickfire skills that allow fast shooting even without aiming first.
Guard & Parry
Holding guard surrounds Juno with shields that:
- Reduce incoming damage
- Prevent knockback
- Block attacks from all directions
But the real mechanic you want to learn is parrying.
If you tap guard right before an enemy attack lands, indicated by a blue flash, Juno performs a parry instead.
Parries can:
- Reflect projectiles
- Increase enemy break gauge
- Create openings
Learning parry timing makes a massive difference during tougher fights.
Swapping Loadouts
Pressing the loadout swap button changes both:
- Melee weapon
- Ranged weapon
This is useful if you want different setups for different enemy types or combat situations.
Element Attunement
You can swap between four active elements:
- Physis
- Aether
- Cryo
- Ignis
Each element changes combat behavior and interactions depending on the skills and Divine Arts you are using.
Divine Arts
Divine Arts consume SP.
Tapping the Divine Art button performs a quick Level 1 version, while holding it charges stronger versions later in progression.
Higher-level charged Divine Arts are not fully available yet in Early Access.
Cooking Guide
Cooking is one of the most important progression systems in the game because it directly affects:
- Healing
- Buff strength
- XP gain
- Survival
What Cooking Does
Cooking provides:
- Healing Bulbs
- Temporary buffs
- Stronger healing effects
- Better combat bonuses
Different dishes and spices create different effects.
Palate Levels
Every dish type has a Palate Level.
Higher Palate Levels improve:
- Healing amount
- Healing bulb count
- Buff effectiveness
- Percentage boosts
So the more you cook and use dishes, the stronger they become over time.
Food Types
There are multiple dish categories including:
- Cooked
- Grilled
- Baked
- Cold
Each category levels separately through XP gain.
How Dish XP Works
When you cook a dish, you gain XP potential for that dish type.
Then:
- Defeat enemies
- Use the active buffs
- Rest afterward
The XP earned while using that dish is stored once you return to a Resting Spot.
Cooking new dishes for the first time also gives a bonus toward leveling Palate Levels faster.
Active Dish System
Your most recently cooked meal becomes your Active Dish.
The XP ring around the dish shows how much XP remains before leveling that dish category.
This system rewards players for actually using food consistently during gameplay instead of ignoring cooking entirely.
Checking Buff Details
A lot of players miss this feature.
You can press the Help button in menus to see detailed explanations for buffs, stats, and effects.
Inside Resting Spots, you can:
- Cook dishes
- Toggle Info Page
- Check exact buff effects
This also works from the inventory menu.
Cooking in Somu’s Dream
Inside Somu’s Dream roguelike mode, cooking still matters a lot.
You gain access to random dishes unlocked outside the mode.
Even though healing bulb quantity is reduced inside the Dream, the healing strength itself remains the same.
So cooking progression still heavily benefits roguelike runs.
Status Conditions
There are currently a few major status effects in the game.
Brittle
Brittle increases damage taken and makes enemies vulnerable to all known weapon hit types.
For example:
- Brittle 30% = enemies take 30% increased damage
Drain
Drain lowers enemy damage output.
For example:
- Drain 30% = enemies deal 30% less damage
These debuffs become very useful during harder boss fights.
Weapon Attack Variations
Weapons are much deeper than basic attack spam.
Many weapons include:
- Charged attacks
- Delayed attacks
- Special openers
- Alternate combo paths
You can check these inside the weapon Growth Chart by hovering over yellow skills.
Unlocking those skills expands the weapon’s moveset significantly.
Understanding Stats & Effects
If you ever see stats like:
- Bullseye
- Breaker
- Modifier effects
you can inspect them using the Help button inside menus.
Honestly, the Help system is one of the most useful features in the game because it explains a lot of mechanics players usually overlook.
