Alchemy is one of those systems in Barony that can feel overwhelming at first. You pick up an Alembic, throw a couple of potions together, and suddenly you’ve either created something amazing… or accidentally brewed a Potion of Sickness. We’ve all been there.
The good news is that brewing isn’t random once you understand how it works. Every potion belongs to a specific category, your Alchemy skill affects almost everything you do, and learning recipes becomes much easier once you know the rules behind the system.
This guide explains everything you need to know about Alchemy in Barony, including how brewing works, how to level the Alchemy skill quickly, potion duplication, decanting, special potion mechanics, and the brewing recipe system. Whether you’re trying to become the party’s master brewer or simply want to stop wasting valuable potions, this guide has you covered.
Barony Brewing Guide – Alchemy Guide, Potion Recipes
Alchemy is a crafting skill centered around the Alembic, a special tool that allows you to combine potions into new ones.
Unlike many RPG crafting systems, you’re not collecting herbs or monster parts here—potions themselves are the ingredients.
Your effectiveness depends heavily on your Alchemy Skill, which is primarily influenced by your Perception attribute.
The higher your Alchemy level becomes, the more reliable and rewarding brewing gets.
Benefits of Increasing Your Alchemy Skill
Leveling Alchemy isn’t just about unlocking recipes. It improves nearly every aspect of potion usage.
As your Alchemy skill increases, you’ll gain the following advantages:
- Offensive potions deal more damage.
- Thrown potions inflict greater impact damage.
- Higher success rate when duplicating potions with Water.
- Better chance to recover empty bottles after drinking potions.
- Better chance to recover bottles after brewing.
- Chance to automatically identify unknown potion uses without drinking them.
Even if you aren’t planning to become a dedicated alchemist, these passive bonuses are incredibly useful throughout a playthrough.
Alchemy Level 100 Bonus
Reaching Level 100 Alchemy unlocks one of the strongest crafting bonuses in the game.
Once you reach this milestone:
- Your Alembic never loses durability while brewing.
- Every brewed potion automatically receives a +2 Blessing.
This bonus does not apply when combining identical potions through decanting, but it affects every normal brewing recipe.
If you’re planning a long dungeon run, this legendary perk alone is worth investing in.
How to Level Alchemy Faster
Almost every interaction with potions has a chance to increase your Alchemy skill, although some methods are much better than others.
| Action | Chance to Gain Alchemy XP |
|---|---|
| Failing to duplicate a potion | 0% |
| Decanting potions | 0% |
| Brewing Potion of Sickness | 5% |
| Successfully duplicating a potion | 5% |
| Drinking a known potion | 16.66% |
| Hitting an enemy with a potion | 25% |
| Successfully brewing a potion | 50% |
| Learning a potion’s use | 100% |
| Learning a new recipe | 100% |
Best Ways to Level
If your goal is leveling quickly:
- Brew new recipes whenever possible.
- Identify unknown potion ingredients.
- Throw offensive potions at enemies instead of simply drinking them.
- Experiment with new combinations instead of repeating the same recipes.
Learning recipes provides guaranteed experience, making experimentation surprisingly rewarding.
How Brewing Works
Brewing requires an Alembic.
Open the Alembic in your inventory and choose Brew.
The brewing screen contains three slots:
- Top Left – First ingredient
- Top Right – Second ingredient
- Bottom – Final brewed potion
Once both ingredients are inserted, the game previews the result.
If you’re happy with the outcome, simply interact with the bottom slot to complete the brew.
Alembic Durability
Every brewing action has a chance to damage your Alembic.
Normal brewing:
- 1 in 40 chance to lose durability.
Brewing with Acid:
- 1 in 10 chance to lose durability.
At Level 100 Alchemy:
- Durability loss becomes 0%.
If you’re planning to work with Acid frequently, carrying a backup Alembic isn’t a bad idea.
Understanding Potion Uses
One mechanic that confuses new players is the hidden Potion Use system.
Every potion belongs to one of three categories:
- Base Potion
- Secondary Potion
- No Unique Use
Initially, these categories are hidden.
Instead, your inventory simply displays:
Unknown Use
until your character learns what the potion does.
How to Identify Potion Uses
There are three ways to discover a potion’s brewing role.
1. Drink the Potion
The quickest method.
Of course, this is also the riskiest, since some potions have harmful effects.
2. Brew With Another Potion
Combining an unknown potion with another ingredient may reveal its brewing category.
If both ingredients are unknown, only the potion placed in the left slot becomes identified.
This is a great way to learn recipes without risking dangerous potion effects.
3. Level Your Alchemy Skill
As your Alchemy level increases, your character naturally learns additional ingredients.
Guaranteed discoveries include:
| Alchemy Level | Ingredients Learned |
|---|---|
| 20 | Juice, Booze |
| 40 | Acid |
| 60 | Invisibility, Polymorph |
Additionally, every fifth level gives a chance to learn another random ingredient depending on your dungeon progress.
How Potion Recipes Work
Every successful potion combination becomes permanently recorded.
After learning a recipe once, you can:
- Open the Alembic.
- Visit the Recipes menu.
- Automatically insert the required ingredients from your inventory.
This removes the need to remember every combination manually.
Keep in mind that failed recipes, explosions, and Potions of Sickness usually don’t appear in the recipe list, even though your character remembers their results.
Potion Duplication (Water Recipes)
One of the strongest mechanics in Barony is potion duplication.
By combining Water with most potions, you have a chance to create an extra copy.
Duplication Rules
Works with:
- Almost every potion
Does NOT work with:
- Acid
- Polymorph
Duplication starts with:
50% success rate
Every 20 Alchemy levels increases this by 10%.
If duplication fails:
- The copied potion becomes Water.
- You may recover an empty bottle depending on your Alchemy level.
At Level 100, bottle recovery reaches 100%.
Decanting Potions
Decanting allows you to combine two copies of the same potion.
Instead of creating something new, the game stacks them together.
Important Rules
- Both potions must be the same type.
- They may have different qualities or appearances.
- Success rate is always 100%.
The resulting potion always matches the potion placed in the left input slot.
Unlike duplication, Alchemy level doesn’t affect decanting success.
Acid Brewing
Acid is one of the most dangerous ingredients in Barony.
While it creates some of the strongest offensive potions, it also carries significant risks.
Acid Mechanics
- Alembic durability loss increases from 1/40 to 1/10.
- Invalid recipes trigger an Alchemical Explosion.
- Explosions always damage your Alembic.
If you’re experimenting with Acid, it’s best to save first—or at least have spare equipment.
Potions of Polymorph
Polymorph is one of the most unpredictable ingredients in the game.
Instead of producing fixed recipes, it transforms another potion into a random one.
Possible results include almost every standard potion except:
- Firestorm
- Icestorm
- Thunderstorm
- Another Polymorph Potion
- Water
Since Polymorph interacts directly with Water, it cannot be duplicated.
If you need more Polymorph potions, you’ll have to duplicate the ingredients used to craft them instead.
Unstable Potions
These are among the strongest offensive potions available.
Unlike normal potions, they can only be brewed through Alchemy.
The three unstable variants are:
Firestorm Potion
Creates a spiral of fire projectiles after impact.
Also capable of destroying walls.
Icestorm Potion
Releases freezing magic that slows affected enemies.
Excellent for crowd control.
Thunderstorm Potion
Produces powerful lightning attacks.
Deals the highest base damage of the three unstable potions.
Because of their power, none of these potions naturally appear in dungeon loot or shop inventories.
Potion of Strength
Potion of Strength is another brew-exclusive potion.
When consumed, it grants:
- +5 Strength
- Increased movement speed
- Ability to push boulders
The trade-off is:
- -5 Perception
For melee-focused builds, this temporary buff can completely change difficult encounters.
Potions with No Unique Use
Not every potion participates in the brewing system.
The following potions belong to the No Unique Use category:
- Paralysis
- Healing
- Extra Healing
- Firestorm
- Icestorm
- Thunderstorm
- Strength
Mixing these with normal ingredients almost always creates a Potion of Sickness.
The only exceptions are special mechanics involving:
- Water
- Acid
- Polymorph
These continue to follow their own unique brewing rules.
Brewing Rules You Should Remember
If you’re new to Alchemy, these simple rules will save you from wasting valuable ingredients:
- Brewing new recipes permanently unlocks them.
- Water is mainly used for duplication.
- Acid is powerful but dangerous.
- Polymorph creates random results.
- Decanting identical potions always succeeds.
- Unknown potion uses can be learned without drinking them.
- Brewing successful recipes is one of the fastest ways to level Alchemy.
Once these mechanics click, brewing becomes much less intimidating.
Barony’s Alchemy system has a learning curve, but it’s one of the most rewarding crafting systems in the game once you understand its logic. Instead of memorizing dozens of random recipes, focus on learning the three potion categories, experimenting with new combinations, and steadily increasing your Alchemy skill.
Before long, you’ll be duplicating rare potions, crafting powerful unstable brews, and turning your Alembic into one of the most valuable tools in your inventory. Whether you’re playing solo or supporting a multiplayer party, mastering Alchemy can make every dungeon run smoother—and a lot more fun.
