The long-awaited Update 1.0 for Escape the Backrooms finally brings closure to the story with a proper True Ending, new levels, and an extended MEG Base hub area. If you’ve already made it past Level 55.1 and finished Ending A, you’ll notice things start to connect in a very different way. This guide breaks down every major section — including Home Sweet Home, Overgrowth, The Grassrooms, and the Final Escape — explaining how to reach each ending step-by-step.
Extended MEG Base – “Home Sweet Home”
After completing Level 55.1 and achieving Ending A (Wrong Door), you’ll wake up inside the MEG Base, which now acts as an expanded central hub.
When you regain control, walk down the hallway and you’ll notice a keycard scanner next to a large reinforced door. Scan your card here to unlock access to two exits:
- The Elevator that leads back to The Hub
- A Door that continues the story into the next set of levels
There’s not much exploration required here. The MEG Base serves mainly as a transition point — your next real challenge begins once you step through that door.
Overgrowth – “The Death Slides”
Once you enter Overgrowth, you’ll immediately notice the overrun vegetation and a darker, decayed atmosphere. Here’s what you need to do:
Turn Right at the Start:
From your spawn point, take a right turn into a small laboratory room. Inside, you’ll find a switch on the wall — flip it to power up the rest of the area.
Unlock the Main Gates:
Head back out into the hallway, and you’ll see the large metal gates open, revealing a new section of the facility.
Rescue the Injured Wanderers:
Inside, you’ll find several injured wanderers scattered around. Your task is to carry them to the slides located deeper within the level. Each slide corresponds to a body, and you’ll need to place one wanderer into each.
Trigger the Exit:
After all the wanderers have been placed into their slides, the exit door will activate. Head through it to complete the level.
Completing Overgrowth grants you an achievement and progresses the story toward Ending B.
(If you get stuck, there’s a helpful video walkthrough linked in most community posts or Steam guides.)
The Grassrooms – “Ending B: The Garden”
The Grassrooms is one of the most visually distinct and deceptively peaceful levels in the game. However, it’s far from safe. Here’s what to expect:
Key Tip:
If you step on the grass — never stop moving. Standing still on it can quickly lead to your demise.
Step-by-Step Progression:
Climb the Wooden Catwalks:
From the starting area, ascend the wooden walkways until you reach a large open room. You’ll see two switches — use them to reposition hanging platforms so you can cross.
Shortcut: If you’re confident with movement, you can skip the switch puzzle by performing a sprint-crouch jump across the gap.
Find the Knife:
On an elevated platform near a tied wooden board, there’s another switch. Activating it opens a small door behind you (located on the grassy area). Enter this room to find a knife, which you’ll need to cut the tied board later.
Break Through the Glass:
Cut down the tied board, then cross over it. You’ll find a wooden spool hanging above glass — cut the rope holding it up to break the glass floor beneath you. Drop down through the hole.
The Four Timed Buttons:
After dropping down, you’ll face a door locked by four timed switches. These buttons are located down the four long hallways in this area. Hit each one quickly and return before they reset.
Final Section:
Proceed into the next area where you’ll do some light parkour to reach another rope holding up a board. Cut it down and tackle one more set of timed buttons to open the final door.
Once through, you’ll trigger Ending B and earn another achievement.
The True Ending – “Final Escape”
This is where everything comes full circle. To unlock the True Ending, you must have already completed Endings A, B, C, and D.
How to Reach the Final Level:
Return to the MEG Base and take the elevator all the way down to Level 3999.
Inside this mysterious floor, you’ll find an arcade machine waiting for you.
Interact with the machine to begin the Final Escape sequence.
The Ending:
You’ll find yourself returning to the Frontrooms, finally escaping the endless nightmare of the Backrooms once and for all.
Completing this level unlocks the final achievement — the True Ending, signifying the end of your journey.
The 1.0 Update for Escape the Backrooms ties together the narrative threads from dozens of previous levels and endings. With the addition of the Extended MEG Base, new interactive sequences in Overgrowth and Grassrooms, and a proper final escape, it’s the most complete version of the game yet.
