While exploring the strange world of Esoteric Ebb, you’ll occasionally encounter collectible creatures scattered throughout the game. Among the most memorable of these are the five hidden Rats. They aren’t always obvious at first glance, but most of them appear naturally as you progress through the story areas.
Still, a couple of them require specific conditions or abilities before you can collect them. If you missed one or simply want to complete the collection, this guide explains where each Rat appears and what you need before you can pick it up.
There are five Rats in total:
- White Rat
- Black Rat
- Green Rat
- Red Rat
- Yellow Rat
Most players will encounter several of them naturally during the story, but a few can easily be overlooked if you’re not checking corners or exploring side areas.
White Rat Location
The White Rat is usually the first one players find during normal progression.
Where to Find It
You can locate it in the Pillar of Jor area, shortly after descending the staircase that leads down from the Lichhouse.
Once you reach the lower section, take a moment to check the nearby ground and surroundings. The rat is sitting out in the open and is fairly easy to notice.
Requirements
None.
You can simply walk up and pick it up immediately.
Because of how early this area appears in the story, most players collect this rat without even realizing it’s part of a larger set.
Black Rat Location
The Black Rat appears not long after the White Rat, depending on the order you explore the areas.
Where to Find It
Look for it in the Crypt area.
Specifically, it appears in the first chamber you pass through, located on the right-hand side of the room.
The crypt environment is darker and filled with stone structures, so it can blend into the background if you rush through the area.
Requirements
None.
As soon as you enter the chamber, you can grab it.
Green Rat Location
The Green Rat is located in a slightly more restricted area of the map, meaning you cannot reach it immediately when you first encounter the location.
Where to Find It
You’ll find the rat in the Roots area, sitting on top of a bush in the lower-right section of the environment.
Because it’s perched above the ground, it’s easy to miss if you’re just scanning the floor.
Requirements
You must speak with Lady Sageleaf first.
Without doing this, the path to the Roots area is blocked by Moongore the Bugbear, preventing access.
Once you’ve progressed far enough to pass Moongore, you’ll be able to explore the area freely and collect the rat.
Red Rat Location
By the time you encounter the Red Rat, you’ll likely already have several rats collected.
This one appears deeper in the game and is slightly trickier to spot.
Where to Find It
After meeting Kraaid, continue moving through the corridors.
Eventually you’ll reach a long hallway that leads to the door where Deputy Meek can be obtained.
At the dead end of that hallway, you’ll find the Red Rat hiding nearby.
Requirements
You need to use the Dancing Light cantrip.
The hallway is extremely dark, making the rat impossible to see without illumination. Casting Dancing Light reveals the area clearly so you can locate and collect it.
Yellow Rat Location
The Yellow Rat is typically the last one players discover.
It’s hidden behind a progression requirement and a somewhat dangerous location.
Where to Find It
The rat appears in the Northern Caverns, specifically just below the area where the main chamber opens up.
However, reaching this location requires a bit of exploration first.
Requirements
You must locate Lisa and descend into the well where the hag resides.
At first, jumping into the well will instantly kill your character. Later in the game, a trigger allows you to survive the fall.
The exact moment this becomes possible isn’t fully clear, but it seems tied to when your Constitution chime indicates you can survive the drop.
Even then, you’ll still take heavy damage when landing.
Once inside the caverns, continue exploring until you reach the open chamber area. The Yellow Rat can be found just beneath it.
