This guide follows the entire main story of the remake from the opening moments in the forest all the way to the final endings. Everything here follows the same route and discoveries during a normal playthrough, including documents, key items, puzzles, and major encounters.
Fatal Frame II Crimson Butterfly Remake Ending Guide
Chapter 1 – The Lost Village
After the opening cutscene finishes, walk forward along the forest path while the game introduces the movement controls. Continue until you reach a fallen tree blocking the path. Crouch under it using O / B, then keep following the trail.
At the end of the path another cutscene plays where Mio reunites with Mayu.
Achievement – Never Let Go
When Mayu is standing nearby, press R2 / RT to hold her hand for the first time.
Continue walking with Mayu down the torch-lit path until you reach the village entrance. After the next cutscene, enter the house on the left side that Mayu is facing. This building is Osaka House.
Osaka House – First Exploration
Inside the entrance, check the debris on the floor to pick up the document News Clippings.
Head upstairs and enter the room on the left with a lantern. This lantern is the first Butterfly Lantern, which acts as a save point.
Return to the main room and cross past the broken hearth into the nearby room to pick up the Flashlight from the floor.
Go back to the lantern room. Near the shelves beside the green kimono you will find a Key lying on the floor.
While in the lantern room, walk around the kimonos placed in the center and check the floor to collect Woman’s Notebook 3.
Now return to the room where the flashlight was found.
- In the left corner beside the dresser is Woman’s Notebook 1
- Behind the room divider near the bed is Woman’s Notebook 2
Return again to the main hearth room and pass through the blue curtain to reach a hallway.
Immediately to the right there is a hole in the wall where Mio can crouch through. Inside you will find Woman’s Notebook 4.
Walk further down the hallway and take the first left. There is a locked door here. Interact with it and the key you found earlier will unlock it automatically.
Inside the room, examine the note on the debris pile to collect Camera Obscura Memo.
After examining the memo, the drawer falls to the floor revealing the Camera Obscura.
Achievement – A Picture of Sisterhood
Raise the camera with L2 / LT, aim at Mayu, and take a photograph using R2 / RT to unlock the achievement.
When leaving the room, Mio encounters the first Wraith. Use the camera to defeat it. The closer and more focused your shot is, the more damage it deals.
After defeating the enemy, approach Mayu and help her up.
Try to leave Osaka House through the front door. The door will not open. Turn around and raise the camera to see a specter trace leading upstairs.
Follow the trace up the stairs.
Near the doorway on the second floor floor you can collect Woman’s Notebook 5.
Continue following the specter through several connected rooms.
In this area you can collect:
- Herbal Medicine near the sliding door
- Stone Mirror near the bedding
Eventually you reach a study room where Woman’s Notebook 9 lies on the floor. Picking it up triggers a cutscene followed by a specter fight.
After defeating the spirit, Mio wakes up and the story moves forward.
Chapter 3 – The Repentance
Entering Kurosawa House begins this chapter. The main objective is to follow Mayu’s trace deeper into the house.
From the entrance hallway the door on the right is locked, so go through the open doorway on the left.
Inside the first room you will see the Hiding Man specter under the bed.
Pick up the documents in the room:
- Fearful Man’s Note
- Folklorist’s Note 3
Attempt to open the door ahead and a wraith appears. Defeat it before continuing through the dirt passageway.
Before turning the corner to the right, take a left into the small garden area.
Here you can collect:
- Glowing Green Crystal Charm
- Additional camera film
Continue through the passageway and defeat another wraith known as Woman Killed by Kusabi.
Behind the nearby room divider is a Faintly Glowing Crystal Charm.
In the next room pick up Mayu’s Charm 3, which triggers a cutscene.
First Encounter With Kusabi
After the scene, Kusabi appears. This enemy cannot be damaged with the camera.
Run away immediately. Go through the door on the right, then turn left and run up the stairs.
At the top, hide in the crouching spot and wait until Kusabi leaves the area.
When it is safe, continue following Mayu’s trace until you reach another Butterfly Lantern room.
Exposure Filter
In the nearby room with the red box you will see a locked door. Return to the lantern room where a specter appears and drops the Exposure Filter Memo.
The memo explains Phantom Expose.
Aim the camera at the circular window in the room and recreate the photograph using the Exposure Filter.
A bookcase appears in the room.
Collect Folklorist’s Note 2 from the briefcase.
Finding the Triple Diamond Key
Return to the hallway and follow the specter into a room with an altar.
Try to grab the photograph on the ledge. It falls below.
Pick up Triple Diamond Key Record beneath it.
Before leaving, examine the altar showing several missing books.
Backtrack to the room where Kusabi appeared earlier and collect Folklorist’s Note 4 near the hearth.
Return toward the entrance. Kusabi will appear again, forcing you to hide in the garden area.
After he leaves, defeat the wraith near the entrance and pick up the fallen photograph.
Use the Exposure Filter on the blood trace shown in the photograph to reveal a hidden door.
Inside you can collect:
- Glowing Green Crystal Charm
- Prayer Bead
Use the filter on the spirit in the closet to reveal the Triple Diamond Key.
After defeating the wraiths that appear, return upstairs to the locked door near the lantern room and unlock it.
Chapter 4 – The Hidden Ceremony
After reuniting with Mayu, examine the photograph at the doll altar. The dolls must be arranged to match the image.

After arranging the dolls correctly, photograph them with the Exposure Filter. A box opens revealing the Double Diamond Key.
Leave the room and defeat the wraith that emerges from the red box.
Return to the lantern room and collect Folklorist’s Note 15.
Use the Double Diamond Key to unlock the door across from the Ombre Room and continue deeper into the house.
Eventually you reach the Storehouse where you can collect Ritual Host’s Note 4.
In the nearby cell room, pick up the Radiant Filter Memo.
Return to the storehouse and use the Radiant Filter to open the blood-sealed cabinet, revealing Butterfly Diary 2.
Chapter 5 – The Sacrifice
After Mayu becomes trapped in the Kurosawa House cell, Mio must leave the house and retrieve the key to unlock it.
Escape through the basement area while avoiding Kusabi. Once outside, return to Osaka House.
Inside the altar room where the camera was originally found, use the Exposure Filter on the altar to reveal a hidden hatch.
Climb down the ladder into the underground tunnels.
Explore the tunnels until you find a chest containing the Rusty Key.
Nearby you can collect the document Film Reel.
Return to the surface and head back to Kurosawa House.
Use the Rusty Key to unlock the cell door and collect Mayu’s Note.
After the cutscene, continue following Mayu’s trace until Mio eventually leaves Kurosawa House again, transitioning into the next chapter.
Chapter 6 – The Remaining
This chapter takes place mainly inside Kiryu House.
Immediately after entering the house, collect Mayu’s Charm near the stairs.
Upstairs in the Tatami Room you can collect Folklorist’s Note 1.
Later you must fight the Broken-Neck Woman on the Heavenly Bridge.
Return inside and use the Exposure Filter in the study to reveal Folklorist’s Note 12 and a film reel.
Play the film reel in the projection room. It reveals a hidden bridge near Misono Hill.
Go to the hill and use the Exposure Filter to reveal the bridge.
Cross it into the cemetery and collect the hidden key near the shrine.
Return to Kiryu House and unlock the main entrance.
Eventually you reach the Doll Room, where a large puzzle requires collecting doll parts:
- Left Arm
- Right Arm
- Head
These parts are found inside red boxes around the house.
After collecting them all, place them on the doll. You will then need Glass Eyes, obtained by defeating the Dollmaker spirit.
Insert the eyes and solve the mechanism puzzle to open the secret door.
After defeating the animated twin dolls, descend into the Deep Path leading toward Tachibana House.
Chapter 7 – Sae
At the start of this chapter Mio temporarily loses the camera and must sneak through Tachibana House while avoiding Sae.
Hide whenever she approaches and move through the rooms carefully.
Find the Butterfly Key in a closet and use it to unlock the next room.
Later retrieve a doll needed to open the Heavenly Bridge door by solving another doll-facing puzzle.
Return to the Deep Path to recover the Camera Obscura.
After retrieving it, follow Mayu’s trace and search the house for the Bell Key.
To obtain it, track down the girl in the crimson kimono hiding in several rooms. After the final encounter you defeat her and obtain the key.
Unlock Mayu’s room and reunite with her. She gives Mio the Octagonal Key, starting the next chapter.
Chapter 8 – The Waning Moon
Use the Octagonal Key to enter the Village Storehouse and meet the imprisoned boy.
Inside you collect the Tachibana Family Crest and a map showing the locations of three other crests.
The remaining crests are:
Tsuchihara Crest
Obtained by completing a hide-and-seek game with three ghost children.
Osaka Crest
Found inside Osaka House using the Exposure Filter.
Kiryu Crest
Located in Kiryu House after following a doll specter to a hidden room.
After collecting all crests, go to the Old Tree near Kureha Shrine.
Use the Exposure Filter to reveal a hidden entrance.
Inside the tree solve the pinwheel puzzle by rotating the crests so their matching patterns touch.
Once solved, a new path opens toward the shrine and the final chapter begins.
Final Chapter – Crimson Butterfly
The ending depends on the choices made during the final section.
Ending 1 – Lonely Road Home
After solving the pinwheel puzzle and reaching Kureha Shrine, defeat the three wraiths outside.
Instead of searching for Mayu, enter the shrine and leave through the secret door alone.
This triggers the Lonely Road Home ending and unlocks the corresponding achievement.
Ending 2 – Crimson Butterfly
This is the standard ending on Normal difficulty.
After defeating the wraiths at Kureha Shrine, follow the crimson butterfly back to Kurosawa House.
Explore the house until you reach the Hall of Ropes where a boss battle occurs.
After defeating the boss, continue through the Deep Tunnel until you reach the ritual altar.
Fight Kusabi using the Camera Obscura.
Once he is defeated, continue forward to the abyss where Mio completes the ritual sacrifice of Mayu.
This unlocks the Crimson Butterfly ending.
Ending 3 – The Promise (New Game+)
This ending is only available in New Game+ after obtaining Yae’s Spirit Stone.
Follow the same route as the Crimson Butterfly ending until reaching the ritual altar.
Before entering the final area, equip Yae’s Spirit Stone.
Instead of performing the ritual, Yae’s spirit intervenes and saves Mayu.
Both sisters survive as the spirits of Yae and Sae fall into the abyss.
This unlocks the Promise Ending, considered the true ending of the game.
