Want to unlock the Solar Gun in METAL GEAR SOLID 4: Guns of the Patriots – Master Collection Version? You need to collect five hidden dolls throughout the game.
The good news is that the dolls are tied to the major boss encounters, so you don’t have to search every corner of the game. The important part is that you must complete the required sections without killing the relevant enemies.
Once you collect all five dolls, you’ll have everything needed for the Solar Gun.
Metal Gear Solid 4 Solar Gun Guide: All 5 Doll Locations (Master Collection Version)
There are 5 dolls to collect:
- Frog Soldiers Doll — Act 1
- Laughing Octopus Doll — Act 2
- Raging Raven Doll — Act 3
- Crying Wolf Doll — Act 4
- Screaming Mantis Doll — Act 5
For the Beauty & Beast bosses, you need to complete their required phases using non-lethal methods.
If you’ve already collected a doll, you can also see it on the upper deck of the Nomad in front of the TV after watching a briefing and loading a save where you’ve obtained at least one.
Act 1 — Frog Soldiers Doll
The first doll is obtained during the Frog Soldiers section with Meryl and the Rat Patrol.
Your goal is to complete the section without personally killing the Frog Soldiers.
What to Use
- Tranquilizer gun
- Stun grenades
- Other non-lethal weapons
You don’t need to worry if your allies kill enemies. Their kills won’t invalidate your attempt.
Where to Find the Doll
After completing the Frog Soldiers section, continue until the Rat Patrol 01 cutscene.
Once the cutscene ends, enter the garage.
The Frog Soldiers doll will be waiting there.
This is the easiest doll to obtain, so it’s a good one to get out of the way early.
Act 2 — Laughing Octopus Doll
The second doll is connected to Laughing Octopus.
This one requires you to complete both stages of the encounter without killing anyone.
That means you’ll need to use non-lethal weapons throughout the fight.
Where to Find the Doll
After completing both stages non-lethally, return to the building.
The Laughing Octopus doll can be found in the center of the building, sitting on a bed.
Simply pick it up to add it to your collection.
Important Tip
Don’t accidentally finish enemies with lethal damage while dealing with Octopus or the surrounding enemies. If you’re specifically hunting the Solar Gun, it’s safest to stick with tranquilizers and other non-lethal options whenever possible.
Act 3 — Raging Raven Doll
The third doll comes from the Raging Raven encounter in Act 3.
Again, you need to complete both stages of the encounter non-lethally.
What About the Sliders?
There’s an important exception here.
The Sliders do not count as kills, so you can destroy them with lethal weapons without ruining your attempt to obtain the doll.
The important thing is to keep the actual required enemies and Raging Raven encounter non-lethal.
Where to Find the Doll
After completing both stages, head to the top floor of the building.
The Raging Raven doll will be waiting there.
Grab it before moving on.
Act 4 — Crying Wolf Doll
The fourth doll is obtained after the Crying Wolf encounter in Act 4.
This section is a little more dangerous because there are other enemies you need to avoid killing.
Non-Lethal Requirement
Complete both phases of the encounter without lethal kills.
Most importantly:
Do not kill the Haven Soldiers.
Killing them can invalidate the requirement for the doll.
Use non-lethal weapons and concentrate on Crying Wolf while avoiding unnecessary kills.
Where to Find the Doll
After completing both phases, look behind Snake, in the direction indicated by the location.
The Crying Wolf doll will be there.
Pick it up to add the fourth doll to your collection.
Act 5 — Screaming Mantis Doll
The final doll is obtained during the Screaming Mantis encounter in Act 5.
Complete both phases of the encounter using non-lethal methods.
Be Careful With the Soldiers
Do not kill the soldiers in the area.
Their deaths can ruin the requirement for the doll.
There is one useful exception: using the Mantis doll itself does not invalidate the objective.
Where to Find the Doll
Once you’ve completed both phases non-lethally, look behind Snake, in the direction you entered the area.
The Screaming Mantis doll will be waiting there.
Pick it up and you’ll have all five dolls.
Tips for Getting All 5 Dolls
The biggest thing to remember is that non-lethal kills are the key.
Before each relevant boss encounter, make sure you have the right equipment ready. Tranquilizer weapons and stun-based equipment make these requirements much easier.
Also, don’t rush away after defeating a boss. The doll usually appears in a specific location immediately after the required section, so take a moment to search the area.
If you’re doing a dedicated Solar Gun run, it’s also worth making a save before each major boss section. That gives you an easy way to retry if you accidentally get a lethal kill.
What Happens After You Collect Them?
Once you’ve collected all five dolls, you’ve completed the main collectible requirement for obtaining the Solar Gun.
The five dolls are:
Frog Soldiers → Laughing Octopus → Raging Raven → Crying Wolf → Screaming Mantis
So if you’re working through the game specifically for the Solar Gun, keep this order in mind and make sure each required encounter is completed non-lethally.
