The Necromancer’s Tale Walkthrough & Beginner Guide

This The Necromancer’s Tale Walkthrough guide covers how to find and raise nearly every skeleton in The Necromancer’s Tale. If you enjoy the thrill of commanding your own undead legion, this is the perfect walkthrough for you.

Across two full playthroughs, I counted 23 total skeletons, though the first one you resurrect will eventually leave to pursue its own “grand adventure,” leaving you with a maximum of 22 active minions at any given time.

These bones are scattered across crypts, ruins, graveyards, and forgotten tunnels — so consider this a treasure map for the necromantically inclined.

The Necromancer’s Tale Walkthrough & Beginner Guide

Preface

Skeleton hunting in The Necromancer’s Tale is both an art and a grind.
You’ll often need to:

  • Use Animate on corpses or coffins,
  • Pass Investigation, Strength, or Analysis checks,
  • Prepare Defensive Rituals (some areas have hostile NPCs or guls wandering even at night).

The goal here is simple — gotta dig ’em all.
Below is a breakdown of every location where you can find skeletons to add to your growing undead crew.

Locations

Cathedral Graveyard

Skeletons: 2

Details: You’ll need to dig them up manually.
Be sure to cast Defensive Rituals before you start — townsfolk can patrol this area at night, and they won’t take kindly to your midnight excavations.

Ruins South-East of Dead Man’s Chapel

Skeletons: 2

Details: Located near the ruins where you gather Nightshade for the Torpor recipe. Both skeletons must be dug up from the ground.

Main Cemetery (Through Dead Man’s Gate)

Skeletons: 3

Details: You’ll find multiple graves here, but don’t waste time on the ones near the front fence — they’re empty and guaranteed to alert nearby guards.
Focus on the deeper sections instead for real results.

Van Elstrik Crypt

Skeletons: 1

Details: Found in a sarcophagus near the entrance. Straightforward and worth grabbing early.

Unnamed Crypt

Skeletons: 5

Breakdown:

1: In a sarcophagus near the entrance.

1: Follow the left wall, past two gul encounters, and open a sarcophagus.

1: Follow the right wall, past one gul encounter, in a coffin.

2: Take the tunnel in the north-west corner of the entrance chamber, defeat one gul, then loot both a coffin and a sarcophagus.

North-Eastern Forest Church Ruins

Skeletons: 3

Details: All three need to be dug up from the soil. These ruins are easy to miss if you don’t fully explore the north-east side of the forest.

Destroyed Tower

Skeletons: 1

Details: Found in the tunnels beneath the tower.
You’ll need to succeed on:

Investigation 4, then

Strength 3,
to clear the path.

Alternatively, if you brought Boerhaven’s creature, it can open the passage for you — no checks required.

Dungeon

Skeletons: 4

Details: This is the most profitable area but also the most dangerous. You’ll need to survive at least two combat encounters.

1: On the second level, after clearing the first patcha room — look near a gibbet.

1: On the second level, in the Hammerling’s room.

1: On the second level, after the Hammerling fight — follow the right wall to find a skeleton lying in a room with three floating blue orbs.

1: Again after the Hammerling fight — this time, follow the left wall and search behind a secret door (requires Analysis 3 and Investigation 5). You’ll find a skeleton sitting on a throne — it has slightly higher base stats than others.

South Canyon

Skeletons: 1

Details: Sitting near a tree trunk, close to the large spider webs. Easy to miss if you rush through this section.

Small Cave in the South Canyon

Skeletons: 1

Details: From the main canyon entrance (where the giant webs are), back up slightly and look to your left — you’ll see a smaller cave entrance.

Follow the left wall, and you’ll find a skeleton near the scroll of Animate+ (note: if you already collected this scroll in the Dungeon, it won’t appear again).

Final Count

  • Total Skeletons Found: 23
  • Max You Can Keep: 22 (since your first animated skeleton eventually departs)

That’s the full list of currently known skeletons across The Necromancer’s Tale.
If you’ve managed to find any additional ones, or if certain patches have added more locations, feel free to comment and share your discoveries — we necromancers must stick together.

While you can raise all 22 skeletons, it’s not always the most efficient strategy. The more undead you command, the more maintenance and ritual upkeep you’ll need to handle — not to mention potential narrative consequences.

But if your dream is to command a full skeletal army and stroll through the realm as an unstoppable bone general… well, now you have the map to make it happen.
